About DeviantTidy
DeviantTidy is a set of styles and scripts to improve the layout and usability of deviantART.

Ever since dAv5, many users have been unhappy with various aspects of dA's layout and design. Some decisions on font size, margins and spacing had clearly been neglected.

And so DeviantTidy was written, to claim back much of that wasted space! Inspired by some of janvanlysebettens 's CSS mods for Firefox, DeviantTidy was a very lightweight modification to fix comment boxes and various other assets on dA pages, to make things clearer and more streamlined. Since then, it's expanded to cover lots of other annoyances, big and small, to improve the look and usability of the site, and with a JavaScript interface, it's fully customizable too.

Features

  • More efficient Comment Boxes: DeviantTidy reduces the minimum height and margins on comment boxes, and further reduces the size of signatures, so you can see more comments at once. You can also add scrollbars to really long comments.
  • Hide and collapse elements: Hide social sharing buttons, 'More Like This' mini-galleries and other bloat from deviantART pages so you can focus on your task.
  • Indent guides: A problem that has been around as long as nested comments is the difficulty you face in working out who replied to who in long and complex discussions. With DeviantTidy, just point at a comment to see guide-lines in the left margin, showing you the exact nest level the comment is on.
  • Cleaner Forum threads: Thread listings are now easier to browse, with all unnecessary icons removed, and shorter table rows (one line high instead of two, doubling the number of threads you can see per screen).
  • Floating comment box: If you want to be able to type your comment on a deviation or journal while looking at the original, without having to constantly scroll up and down the page, this feature allows you to make the reply box float above the page content, following you wherever you scroll. Press ALT+SHIFT+C to activate it.
  • Hide thumbnails in deviation sidebar: Reduce distractions by hiding 'more from this artist' and 'more like this' mini thumbnails when viewing art.
  • Hide the orange Upgrade to CORE ad in the page header (turned off by default).
  • ...and many more!

Installation
In order to use Greasemonkey scripts, you need to install Greasemonkey for Mozilla Firefox, or Tampermonkey for Google Chrome.

FAQ
How can I check that DeviantTidy is working?
When you first install DeviantTidy (or the script component), a dialog will appear when you visit any DA page to let you know that it was successfully installed. You should also see a 'DeviantTidy Options' link under the user menu on the header navigation when you are logged in.

Can I use DeviantTidy with [insert your favourite skin or script here]?
DeviantTidy can be used safely in combination with other custom deviant skins and scripts because it does the very minimum amount of changes required to get the desired effect. In the rare event of clashes in styles or broken functionality, tell me about the issue, and include info about the other mods you are using.

Do you know how to end the font from being bold or italic? Like, I know how to make it become bold and italic, I just don't know how to make it end being one of these things. For example, say I have the sentence, "I love deviantART" and I just want "love" to be bold. I make it bold, but the words after it become bold, too. How do I stop the rest of the words from being bold?

"I >love > deviantART" becomes "I love deviantART"

Likewise,
"I >love > deviantART" becomes "I love deviantART"

I was really curious about the changes myself, but I restarted my firefox, and loaded up a new dA page...

And wow, was I ever impressed. It didn't give me a dialogue box, but everything I could have wanted to change is changed for me anyway.

Really nice, I think. Well done. <3

Are you working on a version compatible with Firefox 4.0? (beta 4 as of this posting)

BoffinBrain In reply to Onihikage [2010-09-04 16:47:02 +0000 UTC]

Sadly the extension wrapper is not working on Firefox 4.0, so I'm going to need help with that.

Onihikage In reply to BoffinBrain [2010-09-04 16:53:51 +0000 UTC]

I'd be glad to help test it, if I can.

BoffinBrain In reply to Onihikage [2010-09-04 17:33:26 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I can handle the testing just fine! I already have 4.0 beta installed. The hard part is getting the extension wrapper working again, as I didn't write that.

Onihikage In reply to BoffinBrain [2010-09-04 17:53:08 +0000 UTC]

Well, some things still work, like the full comment width and the indent guides, I just can't set the options because the link doesn't appear at the bottom.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BoffinBrain In reply to Onihikage [2010-09-05 03:42:21 +0000 UTC]

Well the options, and all the dynamic things like floating comment box, require the Greasemonkey script be installed as well as the style, and currently neither Stylish nor Greasemonkey are available for Firefox 4.0 beta, as far as I can see.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Onihikage In reply to BoffinBrain [2010-09-05 04:30:23 +0000 UTC]

Well, Stylish works perfectly when I change the version info to enable installation, so that's not an issue. Greasemonkey, though - whoa, it was totally borked when I tried it. The options menu was completely broken! So it would probably be a good idea to hold off on updating the GS script until the addon is updated to be 4.0-compatible. Feel free to work on the Stylish part, though.

People who hack their extensions to get them working in FF4 beta are welcome to carry on using their styles just like they did before, since they know what they're doing. You'll find my latest journal on this subject somewhat enlightening.

I think they've been messing with the whole drop-down nav options a lot lately. Now your custom icons don't even show up at all unless you're using the expanded mode.

var comment = unsafeWindow.document.getElementById("gmi-ResViewSizer_description");

comment.onclick = null;
comment.onmouseleave = null;
comment.onmouseout = null;
comment.onmouseenter = null;
comment.onmouseover = null;
comment.setAttribute("class", "");

This will show the artist comment immediately. It's Greasemonkey code as indicated by the unsafeWindow object. Think you might add it to your extension?

BoffinBrain In reply to Richarmeleon [2010-06-22 05:11:43 +0000 UTC]

I found a way to subvert the scripting with CSS.

Richarmeleon In reply to BoffinBrain [2010-06-22 06:03:14 +0000 UTC]

Ah, that sounds even better. I noticed my code only works on freshly opened pages as well, and not the dynamic change when opening something in the same window.

I do not like how often this dynamic loading fails though. A lot of the time all I see is the thumbnail version stretched out and the real copy never downloads until I refresh it.

I am attempting to use this with chrome, sadly it isn't quite working. ATM I do have the lines indicating different levels on comments and i think it is reshaping the textblocks, but couldn't find anything further. most noticably, I didn't find the options in the footer.

I had to install the stylish file as an userscript, because stylish gave an error saying: theSQLTransactionCallback was null or threw an expetion.

any help would be greatly appreciated since this is pretty much the only thing that is stopping me from switching from firefox to chrome .

BoffinBrain In reply to theLightdragon [2010-05-05 17:58:23 +0000 UTC]

Does disabling it make things work again? What other changes did you make recently? This shouldn't affect anything outside of deviantART.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

theLightdragon In reply to BoffinBrain [2010-05-09 10:57:38 +0000 UTC]

I didn't change anything else. It really makes me crazy when it doesn't work (Farmville i mean). I realized then that the last thing I made was installing DeviantTidy. I disabled it and Farmville never frozed my Browser again. It happened somewhere else too, mostly where some Flash or Javascript was supposed to work.

Well will have to use greasemonkey then I guess

Yeah, I have to admit the new programming of the webpages is pretty odd, and I can't find the DT menu! I wish there was a way to have everything static again but I do wish you the very best of luck with getting DT fully compatible with dA v7

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BoffinBrain In reply to Traediras [2010-04-20 22:12:13 +0000 UTC]

v7 deviation pages don't have a footer, for some reason. You just have to go to your messages or somewhere else. Or, if you're using the Greasemonkey version, you can always access the options from the status bar menu.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BoffinBrain In reply to optimisticxpessimist [2010-03-29 06:08:29 +0000 UTC]

Yes, it's simple enough to change, but because the root element is v7 instead of v6.1, everything stops matching so it's as if the entire style were switched off.

I'll definitely consider it. If you know any good guides on making Chrome extensions that would help. As well as that, I want to see if Greasemonkey and Stylish, or similar extensions, are available - I'd need both.

Traediras In reply to BoffinBrain [2010-03-07 00:59:58 +0000 UTC]

Chrome can run userscripts by default so there's not much need for the Monkey itself. Would be handy to have a full extension for Chrome though
