About DeviantTidy
DeviantTidy is a set of styles and scripts to improve the layout and usability of deviantART.
Ever since dAv5, many users have been unhappy with various aspects of dA's layout and design. Some decisions on font size, margins and spacing had clearly been neglected.
And so DeviantTidy was written, to claim back much of that wasted space! Inspired by some of janvanlysebettens 's CSS mods for Firefox, DeviantTidy was a very lightweight modification to fix comment boxes and various other assets on dA pages, to make things clearer and more streamlined. Since then, it's expanded to cover lots of other annoyances, big and small, to improve the look and usability of the site, and with a JavaScript interface, it's fully customizable too.
Features
- More efficient Comment Boxes: DeviantTidy reduces the minimum height and margins on comment boxes, and further reduces the size of signatures, so you can see more comments at once. You can also add scrollbars to really long comments.
- Hide and collapse elements: Hide social sharing buttons, 'More Like This' mini-galleries and other bloat from deviantART pages so you can focus on your task.
- Indent guides: A problem that has been around as long as nested comments is the difficulty you face in working out who replied to who in long and complex discussions. With DeviantTidy, just point at a comment to see guide-lines in the left margin, showing you the exact nest level the comment is on.
- Cleaner Forum threads: Thread listings are now easier to browse, with all unnecessary icons removed, and shorter table rows (one line high instead of two, doubling the number of threads you can see per screen).
- Floating comment box: If you want to be able to type your comment on a deviation or journal while looking at the original, without having to constantly scroll up and down the page, this feature allows you to make the reply box float above the page content, following you wherever you scroll. Press ALT+SHIFT+C to activate it.
- Hide thumbnails in deviation sidebar: Reduce distractions by hiding 'more from this artist' and 'more like this' mini thumbnails when viewing art.
- Hide the orange Upgrade to CORE ad in the page header (turned off by default).
- ...and many more!
Installation
In order to use Greasemonkey scripts, you need to install Greasemonkey for Mozilla Firefox, or Tampermonkey for Google Chrome.
FAQ
How can I check that DeviantTidy is working?
When you first install DeviantTidy (or the script component), a dialog will appear when you visit any DA page to let you know that it was successfully installed. You should also see a 'DeviantTidy Options' link under the user menu on the header navigation when you are logged in.
Can I use DeviantTidy with [insert your favourite skin or script here]?
DeviantTidy can be used safely in combination with other custom deviant skins and scripts because it does the very minimum amount of changes required to get the desired effect. In the rare event of clashes in styles or broken functionality, tell me about the issue, and include info about the other mods you are using.

Stylish has been ported, but not Greasemonkey. At least, it's not on Google's extensions list.

This is a really great addon! Thanks!
It's too bad about the indent guides though
And I was wondering how you get the comment box to float by using a keyboard shortcut?
Because I used it before, and I can't remember it.
Though I was quite certain it was Ctrl+Alt+C, however, it doesn't seem to work...

BoffinBrain In reply to stickyjam [2010-03-01 07:47:11 +0000 UTC]
It's ALT+SHIFT+C. ALT+SHIFT is the modifier you use to activate links and controls in a web page which have 'access keys'.

Man, I love deviant tidy. Are you guys readying a small fix? I realize with the addition of groups, the top banner of message center abbreviations makes a new row sometimes. Anyway, not to be overshadowed with its usefulness : )

Thanks again. As for message center bar overflows, I can only imagine that happening if your screen is quite narrow. The next update will make the expanded message count optional, so that should help.

Yup ^^ I'm working at 1024x768. I'll tune it up probably, if it means a better message center bar and such. I appreciate your tweaks!

BoffinBrain In reply to ShadowKiwi [2010-03-01 22:02:36 +0000 UTC]
You should set your screen resolution to be the native resolution of your monitor, if possible. If that native resolution is actually 1024x768, you may want to consider getting a new one!

ShadowKiwi In reply to BoffinBrain [2010-03-02 00:10:33 +0000 UTC]
Haha, that's probably true. I do believe this is a 1024x768. (we found it in the trash I enjoy things like that.) Only problem is finding those good monitors that aren't flatscreens!

BoffinBrain In reply to ShadowKiwi [2010-03-03 00:07:10 +0000 UTC]
LCD displays aren't at all bad. People criticise them for not being as responsive as CRT monitors, but so long as you have one with a response time of less than 5ms, they're very playable (I have no problems with my Samsung 22").

ShadowKiwi In reply to BoffinBrain [2010-03-03 01:39:33 +0000 UTC]
Oh, it's not the response I'm worried about ; ) I understand your argument. My only concern is that it glares and distorts colors like laptop monitors, when I would like to paint digitally.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
BoffinBrain In reply to ShadowKiwi [2010-03-03 23:24:12 +0000 UTC]
That is certainly true with some cheap flatscreens. Ideally you would get to see them in action before buying one... Or do what I did and get a Samsung and you should be quite safe.

Yes, I never seemed to like the change in performance as you walked past them, haha.. I'll keep in mind samsungs, but it's probably improbable overall that I will get a new one ^^ (and graphic design keeps pushing macs, fat chance)

I wish you'd add an option to disable the stretching of the comments under deviations. I think it looks better with the white space, but I like using a lot of other options this script comes with. It'd be nice to be able to disable that part of it.

BoffinBrain In reply to eagle-elf [2010-02-15 20:57:59 +0000 UTC]
Un-fixing the width of comments is one of the most popular features, and is actually the original reason for the script existing. For people who have very wide screens, I did add the option to limit the width of the dA page - that may or may not work for you.

Indent guides: A problem that has been around as long as nested comments is the difficulty you face in working out who replied to who in long and complex discussions. With deviantTIDY, just point at a comment to see guide-lines in the left margin, showing you the exact nest level the comment is on.
This feature appears to have stopped working.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1
BoffinBrain In reply to LucasVN [2010-02-15 21:18:37 +0000 UTC]
I avoided going into detail, but for the techy people:
As I wrote above, the comments used to use div.nest, which was styled with CSS to have a left-padding. deviantTIDY would give the nest divs a left border when hovered over (and thus anything contained inside it too).
Now, they've reverted to using a plain old style="" attribute on each comment to manually set the left margin. No more nesting, and so logically, every comment seems unrelated.

This is a great idea, but could you possibly offer the ability to remove the mood box as a separate script? It's really the only feature I'm interested in. Unless more control could be given over the aesthetic changes are made to the site - it's nice overall, but I would like the option not to have scrollable journal entries in my message center or having folder descriptions on top rather than the side, for example...
Sorry for being so nitpicky, it really is a nice script

Hello. I just installed your Firefox Ad-on here, at the recommendation of several of my friends here on dA. Unfortunately, I seem to have accidentally closed the help box that comes up the first time the ad-on is started. Is there a way to see that screen again, or is there a place where I can get a user manual on it?
In either case, thanks for fixing dA's bugs for them. They don't seem to like doing it themselves.

I wouldn't worry about the pop-up. It just confirms that you installed it correctly, and offers to take you to the preferences window. It also says that pressing ALT+SHIFT+C will toggle floating comments.

BoffinBrain In reply to once-january [2010-02-15 20:26:41 +0000 UTC]
Glad you like it. But no; these deviation stacks are integral to dA's design, and can't really be reprogrammed. What don't you like about them? I think they work very well for handling individual deviations, as well as giant spamming of submissions from others.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
once-january In reply to BoffinBrain [2010-02-22 06:54:44 +0000 UTC]
Personally, I'm now more inclined to delete them all rather than go through the stacks, because the former requires only a single click, whereas the latter involves clicking through, clicking through to or deleting the deviation, and then clicking back. I'd rather be able to do a quick visual scan of everything at once, but now most of the deviations are initially hidden. But then I don't have a problem with huge amounts of submission spam, either.

Screws up my ability to check all my messages from the message center main window.
Did you happen to read the forum thread complaining about stacks? There's somewhere near 500 comments on it by now.

BoffinBrain In reply to Richarmeleon [2010-02-17 02:00:51 +0000 UTC]
I think if you needed to zap through all your deviations, you would find it easier simply to View More, and then choose by artist or date, which removes the stacks. I don't think it's too much of a hassle doing that in a (slightly) separate page from the main message center.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Richarmeleon In reply to BoffinBrain [2010-02-17 02:19:39 +0000 UTC]
I normally get a handful of deviations per deviant, from only one or two deviants at a time. It's easier to hit up 10 thumbnails than to change pages and go back to my other things.
It's more that it breaks my quick middle-click each, hit X, move to next section of message center flow. I prefer to open any deviations and journals of interest, then reply to messages, then close the message center and view each newly opened tab. I quite like my method. Not for everyone, but it certainly was convenient.
I'm gonna write a Greasemonkey script for it if it doesn't become optional. Would you be interested in incorporating that into tidy?

Unfortunately that's far too big a project for me to get into right now. And even if I did have the time, trying to reverse-engineer and interpret dA's compiled, shrink-wrapped JavaScript is nearly impossible.
