About DeviantTidy
DeviantTidy is a set of styles and scripts to improve the layout and usability of deviantART.

Ever since dAv5, many users have been unhappy with various aspects of dA's layout and design. Some decisions on font size, margins and spacing had clearly been neglected.

And so DeviantTidy was written, to claim back much of that wasted space! Inspired by some of janvanlysebettens 's CSS mods for Firefox, DeviantTidy was a very lightweight modification to fix comment boxes and various other assets on dA pages, to make things clearer and more streamlined. Since then, it's expanded to cover lots of other annoyances, big and small, to improve the look and usability of the site, and with a JavaScript interface, it's fully customizable too.

Features

  • More efficient Comment Boxes: DeviantTidy reduces the minimum height and margins on comment boxes, and further reduces the size of signatures, so you can see more comments at once. You can also add scrollbars to really long comments.
  • Hide and collapse elements: Hide social sharing buttons, 'More Like This' mini-galleries and other bloat from deviantART pages so you can focus on your task.
  • Indent guides: A problem that has been around as long as nested comments is the difficulty you face in working out who replied to who in long and complex discussions. With DeviantTidy, just point at a comment to see guide-lines in the left margin, showing you the exact nest level the comment is on.
  • Cleaner Forum threads: Thread listings are now easier to browse, with all unnecessary icons removed, and shorter table rows (one line high instead of two, doubling the number of threads you can see per screen).
  • Floating comment box: If you want to be able to type your comment on a deviation or journal while looking at the original, without having to constantly scroll up and down the page, this feature allows you to make the reply box float above the page content, following you wherever you scroll. Press ALT+SHIFT+C to activate it.
  • Hide thumbnails in deviation sidebar: Reduce distractions by hiding 'more from this artist' and 'more like this' mini thumbnails when viewing art.
  • Hide the orange Upgrade to CORE ad in the page header (turned off by default).
  • ...and many more!

Installation
In order to use Greasemonkey scripts, you need to install Greasemonkey for Mozilla Firefox, or Tampermonkey for Google Chrome.

FAQ
How can I check that DeviantTidy is working?
When you first install DeviantTidy (or the script component), a dialog will appear when you visit any DA page to let you know that it was successfully installed. You should also see a 'DeviantTidy Options' link under the user menu on the header navigation when you are logged in.

Can I use DeviantTidy with [insert your favourite skin or script here]?
DeviantTidy can be used safely in combination with other custom deviant skins and scripts because it does the very minimum amount of changes required to get the desired effect. In the rare event of clashes in styles or broken functionality, tell me about the issue, and include info about the other mods you are using.

No, I meant, would you like a copy of my script if I get it working?

BoffinBrain In reply to Richarmeleon [2010-02-21 15:21:01 +0000 UTC]

Well, sure, but I don't think it's a practical task. When you open the message center, you only get information about the number of deviations in the stack, and then you have to make another request to actually get the details. Doing that for every single stack on display would be very slow, so it would be easier and faster just to switch to View All and change the view mode.

Richarmeleon In reply to BoffinBrain [2010-02-22 02:02:29 +0000 UTC]

I was actually planning on "loading" the "all messages" view and just replacing the entire "stacked" view. I wasn't gonna bother specifically checking for stacks.

Ah... That's certainly a better idea. Well, good luck with it!

Richarmeleon In reply to BoffinBrain [2010-03-11 03:24:11 +0000 UTC]

Ok, never mind. Someone at dA staff added a stack on/off option.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

BoffinBrain In reply to Richarmeleon [2010-03-15 01:39:30 +0000 UTC]

I guess there was a very high demand for it. I would have been especially annoyed if they added stacks to everything without giving us the option.

"High demand"? Even Sephiroth couldn't have caused such a commotion.

This is a wonderful extension, but I've got a little problem. :/

I want to use MessageCenter2Go along with this, but turning off the display-message-types-in-the-message-bar does nothing. I can't make the "1J, 2R" thing go away unless I uninstall the addon. Please lend me some aid.

Thanks!

Can you provide a link to this MessageCenter2Go script?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ProtractorNinja In reply to BoffinBrain [2010-02-04 02:29:25 +0000 UTC]

There's nothing wrong with the other one. :/

I guess I didn't explain it well. Sorry.

I can't turn off the message types that are generated by deviantTIDY. The box in the settings window for them isn't checked, but they're still there.

Thanks!

I've made a poll to see if people find expanded message counts useful. If the ratio is less than about two-thirds, I'll make it optional.

And I just wanted a link to the other script to take a look at it.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

ReyvinVinnex In reply to BoffinBrain [2010-02-05 23:08:55 +0000 UTC]

I don't think you made that poll clear enough for this purpose. I thought the poll was speaking in general, which would have led me to enter the wrong choice had I had MessageCenter2Go installed at the time. I just got done removing that feature from the .css for that very reason, as I've found MessageCenter2Go far more useful. In fact, you should check it out, it's pretty darned handy!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

BoffinBrain In reply to ReyvinVinnex [2010-02-15 21:03:35 +0000 UTC]

I think I see what you meant now. I'm guessing you had the expanded count appearing twice. I might add an option next time.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ReyvinVinnex In reply to BoffinBrain [2010-02-15 22:44:10 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it does appear twice. The problem is that expanded message counts, as found in devianTIDY are extremely popular, so much so that authors tend to add it as a freebie in an otherwise unrelated script! One example is one of the ad-removing styles on UserScripts.org, and it took me a long time to identify it as an offending script!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

BoffinBrain In reply to ReyvinVinnex [2010-02-19 00:46:37 +0000 UTC]

I know why it's offered as a freebie by so many people - it's so easy to do! There are examples of how to do it written in tonnes of journals.

I like having them there, but the other script has hovering to see a preview, which seems quite useful.

The redirect option doesn't work
(Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; de; rv:1.9.1.7) Gecko/20091221 Firefox/3.5.7 (.NET CLR 3.5.30729)

BoffinBrain In reply to rawimage [2010-02-03 23:05:54 +0000 UTC]

Redirect only works if you enter your login details into the main login panel (the one you see when you log out) - not the one at the top. That's because logging in using the login panel takes you to a URL with 'loggedin=1' at the end, whereas the other one doesn't. That's the main workaround for now, but I may make my own solution some time.

rawimage In reply to ??? [2010-02-01 13:03:01 +0000 UTC]

Would it be a good idea to make the settings account based so that one can have different settings for different accounts? E.g. I only need the print submission dialog for my main account and would like to set it on Skip for the others.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

BoffinBrain In reply to rawimage [2010-02-03 23:09:14 +0000 UTC]

Settings for multiple users is certainly possible, but it makes things more complicated for regular users, who most likely want to keep all their settings the same, no matter who they're logged in as. Unfortunately, it's one of those things that would please, perhaps, half a dozen advanced users, but annoy everyone else.

I'm going crazy without my DeviantTIDY .. but every single page I go to or reload has this annoying little pop-up box saying deviantTIDY is already installed.. I've had it uninstalled so long I'm going nuts. any clue how to fix this? I have it as a firefox add-on and I have the newest version of firefox.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

BoffinBrain In reply to Gathouria [2010-02-01 02:14:46 +0000 UTC]

Make absolutely certain that you don't have it running as a Firefox add-on AND as a Greasemonkey script.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Gathouria In reply to BoffinBrain [2010-02-01 02:25:11 +0000 UTC]

How do I check if it's running in reasemonkey? (which it probably is))

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

BoffinBrain In reply to Gathouria [2010-02-03 23:03:07 +0000 UTC]

Well, for one, you should check if you're using Greasemonkey. If so, right-click the status bar icon and go to Manage User Scripts, and look for deviantTIDY in the list of installed scripts.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Gathouria In reply to BoffinBrain [2010-02-16 07:46:45 +0000 UTC]

Greasemonkey says it's enabled, and deviantTIDY is listed, but when I click on it it gives me the same 'not loaded' message.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

BoffinBrain In reply to Gathouria [2010-02-17 01:57:18 +0000 UTC]

And are you using it as a Firefox add-on at the same time? If so, you must not do that.

If you still have trouble, perhaps you should try removing the GM script, and uninstalling the Firefox add-on if you have that installed, and then try again. Make sure the GM script isn't installed twice under possibly different names.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Gathouria In reply to BoffinBrain [2010-02-17 06:33:48 +0000 UTC]

No, now that I remember, I turned it off because it was bugging out before, but I don't have the deviantTIDY features. I'll try turning it off and using the add-on since it's already installed. If that doesn't work, I'll try Greasemonkey again.

Okay, I tried it and it told me I could download the newest version (because I'm still on 4.2)) and it told me I could not use it with my firefox version (3.5.2)) and some features of deviantTIDY (such as the awesome bars next to the nested comments)) are not there. Is there a way to fix this and update to 4.6? I looked in my options but did not see one for turning these features on and off.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

BoffinBrain In reply to Gathouria [2010-02-19 00:23:41 +0000 UTC]

You should be able to update it directly from the Add-ons window. Otherwise, uninstall it and restart Firefox, then go and install it again.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Gathouria In reply to BoffinBrain [2010-02-19 03:09:20 +0000 UTC]

it's still not letting me install the latest version because of my firefox version. (I uninstalled it and tried to re-install it again))

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

BoffinBrain In reply to Gathouria [2010-02-21 15:15:41 +0000 UTC]

That means you must have a pretty old Firefox! At least 3.5.0 is required, and that was released about half a year ago.

Gathouria In reply to BoffinBrain [2010-03-07 22:44:33 +0000 UTC]

I released the update already. They should always have dividing lines, and if you see any without, let me know, but note that comments which are created after page-load cannot be processed (and you'll just see the regular double-dash).
