About DeviantTidy
DeviantTidy is a set of styles and scripts to improve the layout and usability of deviantART.
Ever since dAv5, many users have been unhappy with various aspects of dA's layout and design. Some decisions on font size, margins and spacing had clearly been neglected.
And so DeviantTidy was written, to claim back much of that wasted space! Inspired by some of janvanlysebettens 's CSS mods for Firefox, DeviantTidy was a very lightweight modification to fix comment boxes and various other assets on dA pages, to make things clearer and more streamlined. Since then, it's expanded to cover lots of other annoyances, big and small, to improve the look and usability of the site, and with a JavaScript interface, it's fully customizable too.
Features
- More efficient Comment Boxes: DeviantTidy reduces the minimum height and margins on comment boxes, and further reduces the size of signatures, so you can see more comments at once. You can also add scrollbars to really long comments.
- Hide and collapse elements: Hide social sharing buttons, 'More Like This' mini-galleries and other bloat from deviantART pages so you can focus on your task.
- Indent guides: A problem that has been around as long as nested comments is the difficulty you face in working out who replied to who in long and complex discussions. With DeviantTidy, just point at a comment to see guide-lines in the left margin, showing you the exact nest level the comment is on.
- Cleaner Forum threads: Thread listings are now easier to browse, with all unnecessary icons removed, and shorter table rows (one line high instead of two, doubling the number of threads you can see per screen).
- Floating comment box: If you want to be able to type your comment on a deviation or journal while looking at the original, without having to constantly scroll up and down the page, this feature allows you to make the reply box float above the page content, following you wherever you scroll. Press ALT+SHIFT+C to activate it.
- Hide thumbnails in deviation sidebar: Reduce distractions by hiding 'more from this artist' and 'more like this' mini thumbnails when viewing art.
- Hide the orange Upgrade to CORE ad in the page header (turned off by default).
- ...and many more!
Installation
In order to use Greasemonkey scripts, you need to install Greasemonkey for Mozilla Firefox, or Tampermonkey for Google Chrome.
FAQ
How can I check that DeviantTidy is working?
When you first install DeviantTidy (or the script component), a dialog will appear when you visit any DA page to let you know that it was successfully installed. You should also see a 'DeviantTidy Options' link under the user menu on the header navigation when you are logged in.
Can I use DeviantTidy with [insert your favourite skin or script here]?
DeviantTidy can be used safely in combination with other custom deviant skins and scripts because it does the very minimum amount of changes required to get the desired effect. In the rare event of clashes in styles or broken functionality, tell me about the issue, and include info about the other mods you are using.

I think it's the Script because I just installed it and I'm having the same issue, if I disable it shows again.

I've got a suggested change for your "show messages in tab title" option. I've been using a similar thing I wrote myself. It shows a total count instead of using the link texts. It will also refresh the page on a set interval if there are no messages. Feel free to poke around with it and offer any comments. If you use it, that'd be awesome, but for right now, I've just disabled the one you came up with and stuck with my own.

That's also cool, but I chose the lightweight option for two reasons. With correspondence items, hot topics, group messages and all the other things you get these days, and the fact that all the abbreviations for them have completely changed since v4, they don't mean anything to me any more! It's easier just to know if there's a message, and then I'll just scan it. Secondly, auto-refresh is awesome, but I feel there's no need for me to have to provide it myself, as TabMixPlus for Firefox already allows this, and probably several other add-ons too.

Mine doesn't show the abbreviations. Just a count.
Also, mine only autorefreshes with 0 total messages.

I want to be able to re-enable the "more bar" text. Many of the icons are similar, and if it weren't for dT hiding the text, I'd use the "more bar" more often. I know you can get the text back by clicking the "more" drop-down, but I'd rather there be a radio button for hiding the "more bar" text. Other than that, I love it!

I've added the option to the next release, so that should keep you happy. It's a shame that dA couldn't have made all the icons unique.

Well they really, really should update it then! 3.5 has been around for months. If they're forcing people to use obsolete versions of software then they're putting people at risk of exploits. You sure there's no update for it?

Good news:
The XPCOM chat extension will now work with Firefox 3.5, and it should now connect with the XPCOM on the first try.
So, you can now update to the current version of Firefox, and get the new XPCOM extension AND deviantTIDY!

You could try disabling add-on compatibility checking, if it's not up yet. Usually, the scripts still work.

Bug report:
The "literature thumbnail / lit tag" feature seen here:
[link]
is partially broken.
The draggable thumbnail works correctly, but the background/default lit tag isn't working for me.
It briefly shows, then disappears, and what I see for literature thumbnails is the text superimposed on this background shadow:

BoffinBrain In reply to LucasVN [2009-12-30 23:28:17 +0000 UTC]
I can't help, I'm afraid, because lit thumbnail collecting doesn't work for me at all, with or without scripts! Does it work for you if you turn dT off?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
LucasVN In reply to BoffinBrain [2009-12-31 00:27:44 +0000 UTC]
What I mean is when you use the thumb code, the dT version of this: [link] appear. That part works correctly.
The problem is with the alternate default littag.
With deviantTIDY installed, if a user has no littag, then literature text-type thumbnails appear as seen here:
[link]
Also, if I use the thumbnail drag on them, the dT lit tag appears!
It appears that this background image: [link]
is appearing on top of, and hiding, the dT littag.
I now think the fix is to redo the dT littag script so it appears on top of that background image.
Is there any way for users to modify it?

BoffinBrain In reply to LucasVN [2009-12-31 02:34:19 +0000 UTC]
Hey... Well done. You found a problem that I would never have noticed. I was only able to confirm it after testing on a blank Firefox profile.
Lit thumbnails were looking fine to me, but that was only because I was using AdBlock to block null.png (thumbnail shadows). This also explains why I wasn't able to drag lit pieces - this image is what is used to detect the dragging.
I'll put out an update soon. Thanks for the info!

The extended message count is actually something many, many people asked FOR, and nobody has ever wanted it turned off. Whether or not it's that useful for yourself, it shouldn't take long to get used to, but I'm glad you're liking everything else.

Okami-Freak In reply to BoffinBrain [2009-10-25 22:33:43 +0000 UTC]
Hehe, I guess I'd have to be different on that, eh? xD I guess it could be because I'm not flooded with tons of messages everyday, like some people are. Plus, if I really wanted to know, I used to just hold my mouse over the messages link, and the thing that pops up would show me what I had.
I can understand why people want/like it, though

You could either make yourself a separate user account on that machine, or you could read up on creating a separate Firefox profile on the same user (and select which one to use on starting Firefox).
