About DeviantTidy
DeviantTidy is a set of styles and scripts to improve the layout and usability of deviantART.
Ever since dAv5, many users have been unhappy with various aspects of dA's layout and design. Some decisions on font size, margins and spacing had clearly been neglected.
And so DeviantTidy was written, to claim back much of that wasted space! Inspired by some of janvanlysebettens 's CSS mods for Firefox, DeviantTidy was a very lightweight modification to fix comment boxes and various other assets on dA pages, to make things clearer and more streamlined. Since then, it's expanded to cover lots of other annoyances, big and small, to improve the look and usability of the site, and with a JavaScript interface, it's fully customizable too.
Features
- More efficient Comment Boxes: DeviantTidy reduces the minimum height and margins on comment boxes, and further reduces the size of signatures, so you can see more comments at once. You can also add scrollbars to really long comments.
- Hide and collapse elements: Hide social sharing buttons, 'More Like This' mini-galleries and other bloat from deviantART pages so you can focus on your task.
- Indent guides: A problem that has been around as long as nested comments is the difficulty you face in working out who replied to who in long and complex discussions. With DeviantTidy, just point at a comment to see guide-lines in the left margin, showing you the exact nest level the comment is on.
- Cleaner Forum threads: Thread listings are now easier to browse, with all unnecessary icons removed, and shorter table rows (one line high instead of two, doubling the number of threads you can see per screen).
- Floating comment box: If you want to be able to type your comment on a deviation or journal while looking at the original, without having to constantly scroll up and down the page, this feature allows you to make the reply box float above the page content, following you wherever you scroll. Press ALT+SHIFT+C to activate it.
- Hide thumbnails in deviation sidebar: Reduce distractions by hiding 'more from this artist' and 'more like this' mini thumbnails when viewing art.
- Hide the orange Upgrade to CORE ad in the page header (turned off by default).
- ...and many more!
Installation
In order to use Greasemonkey scripts, you need to install Greasemonkey for Mozilla Firefox, or Tampermonkey for Google Chrome.
FAQ
How can I check that DeviantTidy is working?
When you first install DeviantTidy (or the script component), a dialog will appear when you visit any DA page to let you know that it was successfully installed. You should also see a 'DeviantTidy Options' link under the user menu on the header navigation when you are logged in.
Can I use DeviantTidy with [insert your favourite skin or script here]?
DeviantTidy can be used safely in combination with other custom deviant skins and scripts because it does the very minimum amount of changes required to get the desired effect. In the rare event of clashes in styles or broken functionality, tell me about the issue, and include info about the other mods you are using.

deviantTIDY 4.0.3 could not be installed because it is not compatible with Firefox 3.0.14.
Any way to fix this?

I updated to v4.0.3 (Firefox extension) but comments are still not wide. Also I don't see the comment box at top. Were these feature removed or are they broken?

Which comments are not wide? Everything appears so be in order over here. Also, I've made the the new method of getting a floating comment box BOLD in the description since I was already asked once about that.

The comments on a deviation page aren't wide: [link]
As for the new method, I prefer the previous method. I like to at least see the old comments so scrolling down then up is an inconvenience.
However I do have an observation in regards to the comment box. Once you activate it, you cannot close it unless you either comment or click the "Add a comment" link again. Is this on purpose? A close button or letting us use the escape button would be nice.

The space on the right cannot be removed completely because dA's layout is rubbish. That column is reserved for the statistics box but it runs all the way down the page. Sorry!
They took away the Add Yours link, so I made do with what they gave back in return. If lots of people don't like that, I could insert one manually for legacy's sake.
You should be able to click the little arrow to the top-right of the comment box, or click 'Add a Comment' again to dismiss and re-anchor the comment box.

I hope you've got plans for the new fail of a deviation page. I have to scroll to the bottom to add a comment. Who wants to scroll past EVERY comment just to post a new one? I wonder who thought that was a good idea...

I think i have a problem or maybe it`s a bug , the daily deviation page doesn`t show all the daily deviations and when i disable the extension everything goes back to normal except the daily deviation page it`s still 2 column layout and doesn`t show the whole daily deviations.
for example now i`m disabling it and in the footer there is this daily deviation [link] but when i click on the DD page i can`t see it with or without the extension .
other than that great work

Was so excited when I saw this.
Only problem I've had is with trying to edit the options. I already went through and read that you can edit the options when you first install? Well, I installed it, and it said to restart firefox. Did that, then the options button [I used the first link to just add it into firefox] was opaque so that I couldn't see the options.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
BoffinBrain In reply to GwenavhyeurAnastasia [2009-09-09 01:01:22 +0000 UTC]
You can access the options by clicking deviantTIDY in the footer of any dA page. The Firefox addon options button doesn't work because the script is independent of Firefox so it can be used in Greasemonkey.

I'm not sure if I've mentioned this suggestion before (I suggest so much stuff for this script, I'm sorry xD;) but it would be nice to have an option to limit comments to their absolute smallest size (the height of the avatar and reply box, like this comment ). Also, is there a way to limit comment size in the Message Centre as well? For the umpteenth time, thanks for reading. :)
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
BoffinBrain In reply to MissingHorcrux [2009-10-17 00:52:40 +0000 UTC]
For the first one, the only way to make the comment shorter is to hide the avatar or the button. Not really desirable, and I think the min size is small enough already, really. For the new version I'm just finishing, the min size of message center comments is a little smaller, and the scrolling comments setting will apply to them as well.

one more thing to say
i kind of wish there is an option to keep the name on the tag were it say "submit journal" ^-^;
because both icon are the same for submit journal and submit deviation, then i have to kind of hesitate ant think a second to remember...*even if i put the mouse over it it will pop up saying what it is*

That annoys me too. I see that quite a few icons in the Customize Your Menu interface don't match up with the ones that actually appear on the toolbar. I'll report it as a bug.

Chome's nice and fast, but unless they start supporting user-made extensions it won't take off like Firefox! Hopefully that happens, or Firefox cleans up its act and becomes more efficient.

andynortonuk In reply to BoffinBrain [2009-07-20 14:47:06 +0000 UTC]
I'm hoping for the latter, as Firefox works really well with multiple tags open, especially when you have folders featuring bookmarks, whilst Chrome can't cope with opening a series of bookmarks.

Ooo ooo, could you put back the little counters on the left sidebar of the message center that show how many of each message you have? I liked those but then they removed them D:
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
BoffinBrain In reply to Pyritie [2009-07-19 23:57:37 +0000 UTC]
I didn't even notice they were gone, and never used them myself. They've been properly removed - not just hidden. Writing a script to count messages would be impossible since I couldn't count messages that weren't visible (even after working out how to distinguish between them) and then when they get removed, I'd have to listen for when the user clicks on delete buttons, and count them again... And I don't think it's worth it.

Yes, it'll let you go to your settings the first time you install, but it's always in the FOOTER at the BOTTOM. Your screenshot doesn't show the footer, so I can't say whether it's working or not.
