About DeviantTidy
DeviantTidy is a set of styles and scripts to improve the layout and usability of deviantART.

Ever since dAv5, many users have been unhappy with various aspects of dA's layout and design. Some decisions on font size, margins and spacing had clearly been neglected.

And so DeviantTidy was written, to claim back much of that wasted space! Inspired by some of janvanlysebettens 's CSS mods for Firefox, DeviantTidy was a very lightweight modification to fix comment boxes and various other assets on dA pages, to make things clearer and more streamlined. Since then, it's expanded to cover lots of other annoyances, big and small, to improve the look and usability of the site, and with a JavaScript interface, it's fully customizable too.

Features

 • More efficient Comment Boxes: DeviantTidy reduces the minimum height and margins on comment boxes, and further reduces the size of signatures, so you can see more comments at once. You can also add scrollbars to really long comments.
 • Hide and collapse elements: Hide social sharing buttons, 'More Like This' mini-galleries and other bloat from deviantART pages so you can focus on your task.
 • Indent guides: A problem that has been around as long as nested comments is the difficulty you face in working out who replied to who in long and complex discussions. With DeviantTidy, just point at a comment to see guide-lines in the left margin, showing you the exact nest level the comment is on.
 • Cleaner Forum threads: Thread listings are now easier to browse, with all unnecessary icons removed, and shorter table rows (one line high instead of two, doubling the number of threads you can see per screen).
 • Floating comment box: If you want to be able to type your comment on a deviation or journal while looking at the original, without having to constantly scroll up and down the page, this feature allows you to make the reply box float above the page content, following you wherever you scroll. Press ALT+SHIFT+C to activate it.
 • Hide thumbnails in deviation sidebar: Reduce distractions by hiding 'more from this artist' and 'more like this' mini thumbnails when viewing art.
 • Hide the orange Upgrade to CORE ad in the page header (turned off by default).
 • ...and many more!

Installation
In order to use Greasemonkey scripts, you need to install Greasemonkey for Mozilla Firefox, or Tampermonkey for Google Chrome.

FAQ
How can I check that DeviantTidy is working?
When you first install DeviantTidy (or the script component), a dialog will appear when you visit any DA page to let you know that it was successfully installed. You should also see a 'DeviantTidy Options' link under the user menu on the header navigation when you are logged in.

Can I use DeviantTidy with [insert your favourite skin or script here]?
DeviantTidy can be used safely in combination with other custom deviant skins and scripts because it does the very minimum amount of changes required to get the desired effect. In the rare event of clashes in styles or broken functionality, tell me about the issue, and include info about the other mods you are using.

I am using the Greasemonkey version. I'm not spending enough time on dA to miss it though. I'm not gonna rush you and I don't have time to play with it either.

I do wish you good luck though. I know you've got a lot of users.

Hi- I know this may sound like a silly question, but can some one help me or tell me how I can make the photos bigger on my profile?

Like - My featured print ... etc.

Thanks so much in advance!

The widgets like Featured Print and Featured Deviation will always show a fixed size thumb as far as I'm aware. I think what you're asking has been requested before.

I tried making a custom widget with a full-sized image, setting its width to 100% but it looks like the width of the container is still limited to less than 400px and that's a limitation deviantART has deliberately put on it. So, I don't think there's any way around it.

Actually-I finally figured it out, and i feel kind of retarded for not knowing it before hand. I didnt know I could use the custom boxes more than once, lol. Thank you so much for taking your time to answer me though-I truly appreciate it!

where is the error console for this?
because i cannot find it and i keep getting a pop up that, even on another tab on another site, i get pushed BACK to the loaded tab in the middle of typing. it's REALLY annoying and it tells me to check error console, but i CANNOT find it.

Thanks for letting me know. I'm releasing a fix today for this issue.

FYI, the error console in Firefox is accessed by pressing CTRL+SHIFT+J, but it's only really useful for developers.

ah thank you.
to be quite fair, should i just download the updated version from here?
i have tried to make sure i have the latest one and pressed update but every time it never gets out of this loading screen, no matter how long i let it sit.
i'm sorry i sound so unknowledgable ;~;

If you're using the Firefox extension, go to your Addons Manager and do an update from there.

Press Ctrl+Shift+J to open it. I'm also getting the debug popup "1 dispatch method(s) failed. Check the Error Console for details." but I can't figure out how to dump the error log to a file to show you the errors.

Yavos In reply to sukoshichu [2013-06-06 20:30:35 +0000 UTC]

The error seems to be because of an element that doesn't exist anymore due to deviantArt updates.
To get rid of that error message (it won't help you anyway, except you plan on rewriting the code) just comment out line 418 in the (greasemonkey-)script where it says:
this.log(dispatch_fails + " dispatch method(s) failed. Check the Error Console for details.", true);
and that message won't bother you anymore.

Why did I never use this before. It's actually quite cool.

I don't know if you want suggestions/bugs here but: The widescreen width limit seems broken on this page. 1280 wide resolution, settings at 1200, the sidebar next to this deviation doesn't quite collapse. The Add to Favourites and CC notice bleed over. This setting could also perhaps do with a 900px version, and some styling to the sides? I notice while some elements shrink nicely, the footer and user page headers do too, and they just cut off.

Is there any chance of a feature to disable the "streamlining"? Deviation links have some javascript I guess that lead to generated pages. (i.e. http://boffinbrain.deviantart.com/gallery/#/dr5us9 is this page.) Which I think is a dumb feature, pages load fast enough from their actual url.

Due to compatability issues with other plugins I use and cannot give up (and that have stopped getting updates), I am still on Firefox 3.6, which means the newest version of this does not work on my browser. Thus, I'm still on version 4.2.3

Rather than asking for backwards compatability or anything like that, since I'm guessing that would be a massive pain, can you just tell me how to make it stop alerting me to the newest version of this plugin? I can't update anyway, so I'd like to have it stop poking me about the update every time I visit dA.

Thanks in advance, even if you can't (or don't want to )help me

Richarmeleon In reply to Kirona [2012-05-01 00:42:44 +0000 UTC]

Have you considered running the Greasemonkey script instead? It solves the compatibility issues. I had to switch since I run Firefox Aurora which is on version 14 now where as this is only up to 10.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kirona In reply to Richarmeleon [2012-05-01 06:13:48 +0000 UTC]

The compatability of this isn't the issue, it's a series of other plugins that have long since stopped being updated, but which I still find incredibly useful.

This plugin still works fine for me - I just want it to stop bugging about updates since I can't use them

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Richarmeleon In reply to Kirona [2012-05-01 13:49:30 +0000 UTC]

But you can use the updates to this if you just run the script instead.

Kirona In reply to Richarmeleon [2012-05-01 22:23:07 +0000 UTC]

I don't need them though X3

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Richarmeleon In reply to Kirona [2012-05-02 02:33:54 +0000 UTC]

The chances are highly unlikely that the old version you can run will be changed to stop asking for updates.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kirona In reply to Richarmeleon [2012-05-02 04:20:20 +0000 UTC]

Indeed, but I was more just hoping I could be told roughly where the update check is in the code so I can change it myself

Either way, I'd forgotten I'd even asked about it by the time you replied.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BoffinBrain In reply to Lpz3nc [2011-12-24 01:13:26 +0000 UTC]

If you had it installed already, it won't update because it will know the new version is not compatible. If you're installing for the first time, you can find the previous version at [link] (this is a temporary link). However, you will still get notices every two days telling you a new version is available, unless you know how to modify the code.

I'm curious - why do you still use Firefox 3?

deviantTIDY reduces the font size of comments a little bit, to 11px. Are you looking to disable that?

Yes.

I have bad eyesight, so the smaller font is harder to read.
