About DeviantTidy
DeviantTidy is a set of styles and scripts to improve the layout and usability of deviantART.
Ever since dAv5, many users have been unhappy with various aspects of dA's layout and design. Some decisions on font size, margins and spacing had clearly been neglected.
And so DeviantTidy was written, to claim back much of that wasted space! Inspired by some of janvanlysebettens 's CSS mods for Firefox, DeviantTidy was a very lightweight modification to fix comment boxes and various other assets on dA pages, to make things clearer and more streamlined. Since then, it's expanded to cover lots of other annoyances, big and small, to improve the look and usability of the site, and with a JavaScript interface, it's fully customizable too.
Features
- More efficient Comment Boxes: DeviantTidy reduces the minimum height and margins on comment boxes, and further reduces the size of signatures, so you can see more comments at once. You can also add scrollbars to really long comments.
- Hide and collapse elements: Hide social sharing buttons, 'More Like This' mini-galleries and other bloat from deviantART pages so you can focus on your task.
- Indent guides: A problem that has been around as long as nested comments is the difficulty you face in working out who replied to who in long and complex discussions. With DeviantTidy, just point at a comment to see guide-lines in the left margin, showing you the exact nest level the comment is on.
- Cleaner Forum threads: Thread listings are now easier to browse, with all unnecessary icons removed, and shorter table rows (one line high instead of two, doubling the number of threads you can see per screen).
- Floating comment box: If you want to be able to type your comment on a deviation or journal while looking at the original, without having to constantly scroll up and down the page, this feature allows you to make the reply box float above the page content, following you wherever you scroll. Press ALT+SHIFT+C to activate it.
- Hide thumbnails in deviation sidebar: Reduce distractions by hiding 'more from this artist' and 'more like this' mini thumbnails when viewing art.
- Hide the orange Upgrade to CORE ad in the page header (turned off by default).
- ...and many more!
Installation
In order to use Greasemonkey scripts, you need to install Greasemonkey for Mozilla Firefox, or Tampermonkey for Google Chrome.
FAQ
How can I check that DeviantTidy is working?
When you first install DeviantTidy (or the script component), a dialog will appear when you visit any DA page to let you know that it was successfully installed. You should also see a 'DeviantTidy Options' link under the user menu on the header navigation when you are logged in.
Can I use DeviantTidy with [insert your favourite skin or script here]?
DeviantTidy can be used safely in combination with other custom deviant skins and scripts because it does the very minimum amount of changes required to get the desired effect. In the rare event of clashes in styles or broken functionality, tell me about the issue, and include info about the other mods you are using.

I then re-installed it and it still isn't working.

This is really great! I've been using this plugin since about January 2007 and never got a chance to comment, so I thought I'd say 'Thanks' for hoiw useful it's been.
Keep it up!

Ooh! This is simply awesome! So many small subtle details that really enhance and supplement my DA addiction
Also a llama-be-gone as mentioned in the comments would be a good idea. In fact a button to hide all large bulky emotes would be handy at times
I wonder how I could live without this even just a minute ago! Keep up the great work

Mmm... I'll remember to add that feature. I believe there's a CSS for it already, but I don't think the creator should mind me including it in deviantTIDY as well.

Wow must have spent a lifetime on this!
I can't wait until I get back into the swing of coding and programming. -miss it-

A lifetime, in this case, is a whole year now. I started writing CSS to modify dA since this time last year, and deviantTIDY was released on new year's day.
Yes, programming can be fun, albeit stressful when you get stuck.

yeah, somehow i like getting so involved with it that it's like i don't see the code anymore, just the result. but i haven't done any of it in so long that i fear i might have lost the ability. i'm going to be going to college for it soon though, so maybe i'll be able to jump back in. 6_^

Tricky one... Every useful addition to dA has already been made, but perhaps you could put your JS practise to good use on any webpages of your own.

I realize I'm a little behind on the discovery, (almost misspelled "realize" X3 I like that Spell-check you implemented, seeing how much I typo ;3) but thank you so much for creating this version! I like it so much better than dA's current layout :3 The solid line separating the signatures from the comment makes it a little cluttered for me to read, though; perhaps you could separate the text from the lines in the next version? I looooove that the comment box stays at the top now! ^-^ I was so annoyed with the box at the bottom, I wonder who thought of that "brilliant" idea <.< And that idea of fading the signature in the comments (as discussed with `conorschild ) is a very good one indeed ^^ But I can't find the mood selector, where is that?
Buuuuut yeah ^^ I do believe I'll be keeping this layout

The spell-checker is a feature of Firefox 2, not mine.
The 'comment box at the top' was implemented in the first version of dAv5 but they took it away again, for no good reason.
Extra spacing between the signature and comment is going into the next release, very soon.

Oops! I just started using Ff2 - didn't know it did that X3
That was kinda pointless, wasn't it? I mean.. if people liked it up there, why take it back? Or did someone complain?
Thanks - I hope I wasn't the only one complaining about that I'll keep a look-out for the next release

Nobody knows why they took away the comment box function. In fact, it's still there as a stub in the original JavaScript code, but commented out

You can get rid of the lines by using Stylish (from [link] ) and installing the theme here with the Stylish button: [link]

You're welcome. I know this because I use Stylish in other browsers too. Unfortunately, you lose the comment box at the top, but I've gotten used to it.

Yes, all of it except for the Hover Mood Box, which is a little glitchy. I recommend removing that portion of the code from the file before loading it.

Gotta say, I've put on the new version (probably way too late) and I hate the signatures. The line should be darker or back to how it was before; it's much harder to notice if you're scrolling. Or maybe, knock the text down a space or two. Seriously, especially with shorter comments it's quite disorientating.
I don't like the edit journal button either, at first I thought my CSS had messed up because the icon was in an awkward position. [link]
Sorry if this sounds like bitching, I don't hate it so much as to take it off

BoffinBrain In reply to conorschild [2007-11-29 04:23:20 +0000 UTC]
The Edit Journal button is a part of Gallery Toolbox, and it's supposed to be there in the top-right corner. If you want it elsewhere I can make you a special version.
As for the signatures, lots of people didn't like it being 3px thick, so now it's 1px thick. Having looked at 2px, it might be an acceptable balance, so I'll look into it for next the version, which will also fade the signature out a little bit. Thanks for the reminder.

conorschild In reply to BoffinBrain [2007-11-29 18:10:07 +0000 UTC]
Ahh. I did think that because I got that at the same time and didn't see anything about the button in this; but at the same time I didn't think it was related because it was a journal not gallery. I just prefer it gone, really
3px would be too extreme I think. I think your idea of fading it a bit would be great.

I think it took me ages to get this work on my laptop with opera. And then years to get it work on my pc with opera. I don't know why my pc hates me so But now it looks great! I have some problems with the moods though, but this dosn't bother me. The main thing is that the rest works perfect
And now I have to check how I get your other skins working, too

BoffinBrain In reply to Miriel133 [2007-11-20 20:18:56 +0000 UTC]
Sorry to hear it took you so much time. Once you know where the option is, including the style is rather easy.
Yes, the mood selector is broken in Opera, so I'd recommend you just remove or comment out the 'Hover Mood Selector' code in the .css file. Or, if you know CSS and you want to hide the mood selector completely, you can do that too!

Miriel133 In reply to BoffinBrain [2007-11-21 06:15:02 +0000 UTC]
That's not your fault And for some things it is worthwhile to invest some tome
Sadly I know just a little about CSS, but I want to learn it. And perhaps I can modify the code then, that it works for my opera. But till then I'll remove it how you suggested. Thank you!
