About DeviantTidy
DeviantTidy is a set of styles and scripts to improve the layout and usability of deviantART.
Ever since dAv5, many users have been unhappy with various aspects of dA's layout and design. Some decisions on font size, margins and spacing had clearly been neglected.
And so DeviantTidy was written, to claim back much of that wasted space! Inspired by some of janvanlysebettens 's CSS mods for Firefox, DeviantTidy was a very lightweight modification to fix comment boxes and various other assets on dA pages, to make things clearer and more streamlined. Since then, it's expanded to cover lots of other annoyances, big and small, to improve the look and usability of the site, and with a JavaScript interface, it's fully customizable too.
Features
- More efficient Comment Boxes: DeviantTidy reduces the minimum height and margins on comment boxes, and further reduces the size of signatures, so you can see more comments at once. You can also add scrollbars to really long comments.
- Hide and collapse elements: Hide social sharing buttons, 'More Like This' mini-galleries and other bloat from deviantART pages so you can focus on your task.
- Indent guides: A problem that has been around as long as nested comments is the difficulty you face in working out who replied to who in long and complex discussions. With DeviantTidy, just point at a comment to see guide-lines in the left margin, showing you the exact nest level the comment is on.
- Cleaner Forum threads: Thread listings are now easier to browse, with all unnecessary icons removed, and shorter table rows (one line high instead of two, doubling the number of threads you can see per screen).
- Floating comment box: If you want to be able to type your comment on a deviation or journal while looking at the original, without having to constantly scroll up and down the page, this feature allows you to make the reply box float above the page content, following you wherever you scroll. Press ALT+SHIFT+C to activate it.
- Hide thumbnails in deviation sidebar: Reduce distractions by hiding 'more from this artist' and 'more like this' mini thumbnails when viewing art.
- Hide the orange Upgrade to CORE ad in the page header (turned off by default).
- ...and many more!
Installation
In order to use Greasemonkey scripts, you need to install Greasemonkey for Mozilla Firefox, or Tampermonkey for Google Chrome.
FAQ
How can I check that DeviantTidy is working?
When you first install DeviantTidy (or the script component), a dialog will appear when you visit any DA page to let you know that it was successfully installed. You should also see a 'DeviantTidy Options' link under the user menu on the header navigation when you are logged in.
Can I use DeviantTidy with [insert your favourite skin or script here]?
DeviantTidy can be used safely in combination with other custom deviant skins and scripts because it does the very minimum amount of changes required to get the desired effect. In the rare event of clashes in styles or broken functionality, tell me about the issue, and include info about the other mods you are using.

I think people will be happy to have it back, regardless of the typo they likely won't notice.
You can just fix it in the update for the comment box below the deviation.

I always hate knowing something's imperfect, but then again, a lot of applications these days are written in the most appalling English - sometimes almost illegible!
Yeah, I'll just bite my tongue and get that update out fast as an excuse.

I once found an error. It contained the word "rimmong". It was supposed to be "running".

Most of the typos in that program are Engrish typos though. Like a quiz that I lose several hundred thousand gold because of a typ. It said "which of these NPCs is not in front of the theater?" I picked "Skye". I got it wrong. I go to the theater and there is no "Skye". There was however a "Skai".
At least your typo doesn't cost anyone anything or cause any real confusion.

Yes, it's been broken for a while. I need some free time to fix it.

Hey, I just stumbled across something really nice , thought you'd like to see it for future deviantTIDY updates. Good luck working on it! dA changed around a lot of stuff with those new userpages! :)

I think this kind of style is a little too big to be considered for dT as it is a significant change to the layout. Still cool, though.

So, I had a couple of ideas for the next release of deviantTIDY (if you're still working on it). Most if this pertains to the new releases of the message center and profile pages. It's a bit much, I know, but if you're interested... :)
- Remove "deviantWATCH" from above deviations in the message center
- Remove extra space between the bottom of deviations / journal titles / comments and the "Select All" (etc) buttons in the message center
- Fix the -- lines for signatures
- Remove the text for the "+deviantWATCH" (etc) buttons at the top of profiles like you did for the toolbar
- Add the option to hide comments and/or webcam boxes on userpages (maybe put the option to make every userpage box a unified length, so journals don't take over pages?)
- Add an option to (by default) prevent sitback shows from loading (my computer is rather slow, and loading a page with a sitback gallery/collection show freezes my Firefox for a good 30 seconds)
Also, when I'm displaying random favorite deviations in a custom box on my profile, all the deviations are different sizes and heights. Is there a way to make all deviations the same height, somehow? I know `thespook developed some CSS for journals, but there isn't a way to apply it to custom boxes on profiles. If you could integrate that into deviantTIDY, that would be fantastic.
Lastly, if you worked with `electricjonny 's Gruzify theme and combined it with deviantTIDY to give dA a more unified look... that would be... like... awesome.
Again, that's a lot of stuff, I know. xD But just some ideas for another update, if you're still working on deviantTIDY. :)

1: Yes, I've done that, so it'll be in the new release.
2: Can't be done, as the navigator needs to be on its own line. When the page is narrower, it would overlap the buttons.
3: Will do!
4: There aren't too many buttons and the text is short, so I don't actually think that will be necessary.
5: Not sure how popular that would be. Also, scrolling journals might cause conflicts with Journal CSS
6: You should be able to disable SitBack from your options page. Otherwise, use FlashBlock addon for FF.
7: You should be able to specify something like img {width:123px} and by only specifying the height or width, the image should auto-scale according to your restrictions without stretching.
Looks like Gruzify is a big buggy in places, and it's huge, so I think it's best to leave that as a separate project.
Sorry for the long delay. Hope that answers everything!

1. Sweet.
2. Huh. I would've thought you could just decrease the margins or something to get rid of the extra space. Well, shows what I know!
3. Yay, thanks!
4. Alrighty.
5. That's true, I didn't consider the CSS.
6. I figured that out after I left this comment. Sorry about that. xD
7. I guess I can manually add a line, but I thought you might be interested in making it an official part of TIDY. But no prob, I can manually do it just for me. :)
Yeah, the skin is really huge. No worries, I'm sure dA will Gruzify the rest of the site soon. And I guess TIDY is about tidying dA, not fixing stuff around the site - I got that a bit mixed up.
No problem! Thanks for the nice response. :) When-ish are you thinking about releasing your next update?

2: If you make your browser narrower, you'll see what I mean. It might have been possible to move the navigation to the left and have the buttons all on the right, but that doesn't actually make things any tidier!
I certainly hope dA gets around to gruzifying everything before they release v7!!! They have a history of upgrading the site while leaving certain sections behind in the dust (Notes, anyone?)
As for a release, it'll definitely be before the end of the week. The CSS is looking good and as I wrote in my journal, you can test the beta in Stylish while I finish off the GreaseMonkey script.

2. Just redesign the Message Center! (Kidding.)
Are they releasing another site version for their dAnniversary again? Notes need updating definitely, as well as the forums.
Ah! I didn't see your journal! I'm not using my own computer at the moment (I'm on vacation using my friend's) so I can't test the beta, otherwise I totally would, but good luck getting the kinks out and stuff and I can't wait to try out the new release when I get back!

I don't know if it happened with someone else, but after installing, i lost my 'drag & drop' (yet i hadn't choose disable it in the deviantTIDY options)! All the other things are working perfectly! Do you have idea of what did i do wrong in the install? D:

BoffinBrain In reply to asthasia [2009-01-12 10:57:41 +0000 UTC]
I don't know of any issues with drag and drop. What other scripts are you using that could conflict with thumbnails?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
asthasia In reply to BoffinBrain [2009-01-12 15:29:42 +0000 UTC]
The other script are just the Timer for the deviant chat and the DeviantPlus. I tried restart to see how TIDY could react and in fact, the drag&drop returned, but sometimes it vanishes again (i believe it happens when the browser cache is too filled).
But all the other functions are working without problems!

I am using FF 3.0.4. I see that you updated the script to fix the ID Name Change so it can't be that...

I enabled the limit comment box feature but its still very wide (no change), do I need to restart firefox after enabling? or could you add a feature that lets the user determine the width of the boxes?

BoffinBrain In reply to JikaruTakhira [2008-11-12 00:26:46 +0000 UTC]
The option only has an effect if your screen is wider than about 1000 pixels. Smaller than that, and the whole purpose of having wide comments in TIDY is lost!

JikaruTakhira In reply to BoffinBrain [2008-11-12 22:58:49 +0000 UTC]
my resolution is 1280x1024 and I was kinda hoping it would've made it less as wide regardless, perhaps even around like 800 pixels wide...or even have an option to specify the width the user would like...I don't mind them being wider just not too wide cause then on a screen just over 1000 pixels I have to read pretty far along the screen just for one line.

Hmm... my mistake. I set them to be 1200px, not what I told you. I'll set it to be 900px in the next release.
