Description The local farm museum only opens on Bank Holidays, so I popped down for a look. The blacksmith was forging a little dragon out of iron.

Nice pic, I'd love to learn that actually, nowadays it's usually silversmithing or jewellry only

Yes, it's a shame there's not many places now where the skills can be learnt. There must be some places that still do it though as there's a bloke who runs a mobile farrier business near where I live and runs his forge from the back of a van.

Going to take on a weekend-course now in ironsmithing and then a 8 day study-circle in iron-smithing both aimed for greenhorns like me aswell as veterans who'd like to improve or come back to basics..[here in Stockholm, Sweden] Looking forward to it.

With all of those horseshoes I would suspect this guy would call himself a farrier not a blacksmith, perhaps?

That's very true, although how many of them were actually made at that particular forge I wouldn't be able to tell you. It's not used very often these days, just when the museum is open which is only about eight days a year. I always try to visit at least once a year though as there's always something fascinating to watch, especially the craftsmen.

Many thanks for the and for the watch too

Yes, thank you. It's good to find other people who find it as cool of a hobby as I do. While I am only an apprentice blacksmith, it's quite fun. Thank you for posting such a beautiful picture!

Very cool photo! If the guy weren't wearing safety glasses and that shirt, it would be almost impossible to put a date on the image!

Aye, very true.

I don't know why he had the safety glasses either, he never wore them properly even when using the anvil...

Cheers for the

From what I understand, horses hooves are made from the same stuff as fingernails so it shouldn't hurt...

Irony (pun intended) that he uses fire to forge a dragon!

Bogbrush In reply to MSJames [2006-05-01 16:10:45 +0000 UTC]

Aye

Sometimes I wish I could hit things with a hammer too, but in my job I'd get fired if I did that

I used to light things on fire then hit them with a hammer at my last job, but the other zookeepers disapproved.

But, I guess they still liked me because they sent me off to this cozy place where they gave me a VERY snug jacket with long sleeves

Hehe, the only dragons in Buckinghamshire are the 'George and... ' sort - they serve a good pint though
