Description Twig the hedge-boggle is one of a small group of performance boggles. He plays various roles in a live theater ensemble called ‘Live from the Hedge’. In his latest role, Twig is playing an unfortunate boggle that has been caught unawares by some exploring human child (a highly unlikely scenario, if one is even casually versed in hedge-boggle lore, but entertaining) and captured. He is supposed to have been placed in a jar like some interesting bug, to be brought home and be displayed to the incredulous eyes of the child’s unbelieving parents. The original play was put on and written by famous hedge-boggle play-write Jacques Ives Oakwort. It was, initially, very controversial, but extremely popular with the younger crowd. Twigs performance as a captured hedge-boggle was so convincing that eventually disclaimers had to be circulated, assuring viewers that no actual harm had come to him for the role, also stating that he had in no way been coerced to perform the part

Thank you! I'm glad that you like Twig!!!! He will have limited staring role on my web site once I get it all updated- my [link] site that is- so you might want to keep an eye on the Hedge!

As for Twig, well he was one that I had not originally intended to part with...but as do many artists, I fell upon hard times and thus I was in dire need of extra $$$, so... I hate to say how little this fine fellow sold for: $150 only. But, he went to a woman who loves/loved my work and now owns 4 different pieces.

If you are ever interested in any future works or commisions, you can join my mailing list by simply e-mailing me at my web site address: info@kevinbuntin.com and just ask to be added to the list!

I am incredibly impressed with the detail and emotions you invest in your work. I think Twig is my favorite of all of your creations though. I know he's supposed to be acting, but he looks so heartbroken to be in the jar.

Thanks! Yeah, I had to do that "Disclaimer" so many folks were getting upset! Twig is just too good of an actor for all our own good!

No, not trapped in a plastic jar!
I love this one. I find the subject a bit… upsetting, and a symbol of how humans seam to enjoy to trap any kind of living things, put them in jar and add a little label. It gives me this… sting of sadness that dolphins that are living in small and brightly blue colored plastic pools at zoo give me. Or tigers behind bars in concrete cages. It’s just wrong… yes, zoo’s may help to give people better understanding for nature and they may rise endangered animals, but it’s sad that people can’t respect and care for nature without seeing marine mammals jumping trough rings…
Um, sorry for ranting. This one just gives me lots of deep emotions. Sound a bit funny to say this, but I’m touched by this piece
He looks really depressed and deeply longing for the freedom "out there". The entire figure is magnificently done, but the face expression and pose is simply outstanding.
Wonderful work!

Not to worry- he doesn't stay in the jar! Indeed, the person who bought him will have Twig shipped to her with the jar, but he will not be in it!

You are not the only person the have that very reaction to this piece, which, though it is something that is always in my mind and certainly was in my mind when I did him originally- he was also done as a promotional/demo piece for a class I taught- for details go here: [link] and here: [link] and here: [link] - it was not the only reason I did the piece, and I honestly didn't expect anyone else to experience the same feelings as those which went into the making of it!
My wife was so upset at his expression and his being in the jar that I actually had to make a little "Disclaimer" notice- half jokingly and half out of fear that really little kids and more sensative children might be upset by it- stating that Twig was just an actor playing a part and no hedge-boggles were harmed in the making of blah blah blah...you get the idea. I was really surprised that so many picked up on this underlying and the pervasive theme in this piece! So no, you weren't just ranting, and no, I don't find your reaction to this odd at all. On the contrary, I am very pleased that it moved you so...

Ah, it reminds me of my stolid cubicle at work. We're all trapped one way or another. He looks so sad.

But through our art we can, for a time, transcend all of that.... in at least that, as artists, we are lucky.

By the way, your photos are stunning!

Yes, exactly. Photography is a way to escape from the mundane.

All art is, that's what my own sculpts are really: tickets for everyone to came into my own little microcosm and away from the marocosm...lets get small....

I appologize for not being very good with French- I wish I were better- but I think I understand what you said here, and I am glad he moves you so! My wife was so upset at seeing this little fellow in the jar as he was, so as a result I typed up a Disclaimer- as a joke- stating that no Hedge-boggles were actually hurt to make this display! I was in a bit of a sad mood when I made him, and it came through in his eyes much more strongly than I had originally intended.

Really really amazing, fantastic character and work, congratulations!!
Wouln't you share with us some details on the work (bigger pictures and material used ?).

Boggleboy In reply to jefeke [2005-04-21 06:20:10 +0000 UTC]

I'll try and post some bigger pics of Twig. Thanks, Jean, for the look and the positive feedback!

As far as material, I work mostly in polymer clay- usually Sculpey brand, because it is the easiest for me to get and the most affordable. I also use many natural materials: acorn caps, moss, intersting rocks, twigs ... anything else that inspires me or seems to fit. I use many types of fabric to do the clothing for my sculpts out of- and yes, I do sew them myself by hand. Often times the material cmoes from left over scraps of various materials, or even recycled clothing! I use lots of different types of leather as well. The only real limit is ones own inability to accept that nearly any material may be used to create high art... Although I'm not sure my work could be called "high art", I do love doing it, and I put much of myself into each piece.

Let me know if you have any more specific questions, and it's great to speak with/write to- as it were- someone from all the way out in your part of the world! That is one of the most facinating things about this great site here for me! Take care!

well, the more i look at the faces, the more i love them. I do really appreciate the amount of work and effort and the result is just great.
The face expression is, imho, the best part of your work. I hope to see many more. I just added you to my watch list

Yep, the internet has this unique feature, connecting people, not the nokia commercial way, but interestingly enough, on a human level.

Cheers,

J.
