That comment made me think of Magritte's painting entitled "Ceci n'est pas une pipe" (French for "This is not a pipe", also known as "The Treachery of Images"). A painting he created of a smoking pipe with said caption to communicate another interesting paradox, in that a visual representation of a pipe is not an actual pipe.
Coming from a surreal artist I have a great deal of admiration for his ability to conceptualize beyond running with more random flights of fantasy like Dali for example. Something I hoped to retain in this image grounded in reality for the most part, yet supplemented a subtle element of surprise with the fish fossil

For "Ceci n'est pas une pipe", I thank you! I learned something here. Here is one paper that I found. See Michel Foucault: “This is not a Pipe” by Jeanne Willette | Jan 17, 2014 | Theory | at arthistoryunstuffed.com/michel… . The idea does show how inadequate our language really is. Really we do "impressionist language".
I agree that you have created something new. Not the actual stream or the fossil but something with a new name. It is beautiful in its own right.
It ties in directly with an abstract art series that I have been viewing. I I have been struggling to better understand non-objective art. Your comment reminds me of statements in the video series that I have viewed. It has been helpful to me I feel. So I will post the link to the first of six here. See 1/6 The Rules Of Abstraction With Matthew Collings at www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bg3oQ_… .
So in the video that say basically what you said, " I hoped to retain in this image grounded in reality for the most part, yet supplemented a subtle element of surprise " ... that is abstract nonobjective art to be good needs to "be true to real reality"! But, yet in abstract art you are "making a visual work of art that demands to be seen on its own visual terms." I think that is what you did with this composite photograph ( yes, I am using the older term, related to film phtography ). You are making art to be seen on its own visual terms with your compositions.
Also, I came into "messing with my photographs" through reading about the Pictorialists and their goal of creating art with their photographs. I use to have links to better references but for tonight maybe this Wikipedia one will do. Pictorialism is "a style in which the photographer has somehow manipulated what would otherwise be a straightforward photograph as a means of "creating" an image rather than simply recording it" with a goal of creating art. I think you achieved that ... it is a beautiful creation with a name separate with of course agree with the ideal of your image not being a pipe. See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pictoria…
P.S. Here is a famous early abstract art piece ... only about a black arch. Picture With A Black Arch by Wassily Kandinsky . (www.wikiart.org/en/wassily-kan… ) If I squint with one eye closed ... your image I see the beginnings of Picture With A White Stream ... and if the fossil were to be lightened Picture With a Autumn Fossil Stream. Just a very sleepy abstract thought.
Best,
Frank
