Are those marks made by erosion? like... in a stair in Santiago's Cathedral, that the floor is erosionated by millions of people walking in the same place during centuries. Or those were made when the sand was soft and then it hardened with the ages? like dinosaurs footprints.
I'm really intrigued!!

Thanks!! See Lauren's comment below for her very helpful insight on this.
From my own limited research, it seems these are handprints carved out by Native Americans and qualify as historical pictographs / petroglyphs. No definitive context I can find as to what they mean, one theory suggests they are handprints left by the anguish of mothers in labor, or perhaps shamans sanctifying this blessed Earth. Who knows? The mystery of it all makes it all the more intriguing to me, glad you are intrigued too

Anthropogenic erosion of the rock caused by repeatedly rubbing hands over the same position for an extended period of time.
Further, sandstones often aren't that difficult to erode. For example, just rubbing your fingers across many different sandstones in situ or used in building construction and you will notice little grains will be collected on your skin.

Methinks that would still take a very long time; and garner some very sore fingers.
Course it could be a tribal thing -- everybody into it on momentous occasions.

Sandstones and especially finer grained sed rocks like mudstones and siltstones or those with less cementation are not very difficult to erode. Continuous rubbing over several generations would definitely cause erosion like that.

A very large cat with blunted nails, or Sasquatch?

Obviously human as pointed out, but I get the feeling you were fantasizing as I was when stumbling on this gem of a texture
