"What the hell is going on here?"
Vanessa's ire shakes me out of my trance. "I... uh..." I stammer, "was feeding Callie."
"I was joking about making her as fat as the Lead," she says, hands on her hips, frowning. "What were you thinking?"
"I wasn't, I - "
"I can see that," she snaps.
"It's complicated," I say.
"Enlighten me," she says, pulling Callisto away from the can of tuna. The feline expresses her displeasure. Loudly.
"She let you pull her away," I say, shocked.
"What has gotten into you?" the brunette says. "Of course I 'pulled her away.' It's not like she's in a position to do something about it."
"But she is..." I start. "Or was." I look at her with sad eyes which always gets a reaction from her. "I'm confused."
"I can tell," she complains, ready to bite my head off. Well, almost always... "Start from the beginning. You were saying something about the cat being part of the problem."
"Hold on a second," I say, looking at the tabby. "Talk to her."
*Don't you think I've been trying,* Callie snaps. Everyone apparently is snappy today. *Apparently she is psi immune. Rare among humans but I can't mindspeak or compel her.*
"I'm waiting," Vanessa says, tapping her stiletto clad foot angrily.
"Hold a little longer," I tell my beloved. To the cat I say, "Can't you do something to convince her I'm not crazy?"
"This is not very convincing," 'Nessa observes.
"Quiet!" I snap. Snapping must be contagious. Then she walks over, kissing me on the cheek. "Sorry, that was uncalled for." She takes me in her arms and I melt like I always do. There is no better place in the solar system than Rocketgrrrl's embrace. "I love you."
"I'm sorry as well," she says. "And apparently you are not crazy."
"Thank you," I say. "What convinced you?"
