Moving the probe away from the open circuit, I face the annoying (but oh so cute) tabby. "Did you tell her I was busy?"
"The Captain wants an update."
"The Captain wants an update," I echo in my best feline voice. "Feed me tuna."
"Finally," Callie* says, "you get it."
"You just do what she wants because she always brings you a can of tuna."
"Remarkable woman," the tabby says. "For a human. And she wants - "
"An update," I sigh. "Fine, put her through."
"Ensign," the blonde woman says briskly, "Sitrep."
"I'm working on it," I respond. "The design is complex. I don't understand half of it."
"Don't try and understand it," she says. "I know I don't."
"I understand," I explain. "There is a weird modulation issue with the - "
"Do not tell me you changed anything from the specifications," she says frostily. I shiver despite myself.
"No, Nat... er... Captain," I stammer, "I didn't. It's just that - "
"Follow Commander McEndicott's instructions to the letter. Don't screw this up or I will come pay you a visit and I hear people do not like it when I'm angry."
I read her autobiography. Good god, if half of it is true -
"Yes, Ma'am!" I blurt out. "No changes, Ma'am!"
"Thank you," she chuckles lightly. "Ang, this project is essential for the security of the Confederacy. You will never be assigned a more important project. Keep me posted. Fontaine, out."
"Screw up," Callie says.
"What?" I look at her, shocked. "She is someone's bad side I would rather not be on."
"But she'll bring tuna!"

* The tabby, obviously, because Angie would otherwise be talking to herself.
