Description
"Disconnect" (2011) is an animated film I created/directed, exploring themes of depression and loneliness. The protagonist - Malcolm - struggles with his inability to connect with the world and the people around him.This was my graduation film for Emily Carr and took about 8 months to complete. To date it's the largest project I've worked on. I feel I could have done better, but I'm still very proud I what I managed to accomplish.
Special Thanks to my family and friends for putting up with me during the process.

My thoughts? Well, yeah I am "disconnected" right now in mentality, unable to mingle with the common herds of socialites. I have too much fight and too much...Independence? (for lack of better word) Anyway, my point is I can sort of relate to this even in my own high-power way.

Yeah, that was extremely well done; the quick flash from a faceless nobody to someone...both more human and important. That captures life, in how most people only recognize those that are important.

he sat it down on the table? the picture frame doesn't have an image drawn into it because it was shown for a very short amount of time and I didn't want to show an image in the picture frame at this point in the film.

This was beautiful. You captured the feeling perfectly and put it into a stunning little animation. The backgrounds were beautiful and the music was touching. The animation was fluid and very emotional. Beautiful job!

This animation is simply put, an amazing work of art.
In a deeper aspect, this is such a real experience, that many people can connect and be touched by it.
It's really interesting how when you don't really feel much in life anymore, and forget the faces of the people you pass by. It seems meaningless, right? Why bother. That's where the disconnection hurts. Everybody's got a heart inside them. It's so sad for people to either hide or abuse it, which is why things like this can happen.
Pictures are 1,000 words. They're amazing, and help us remember that heart is still there when it's gone dormant.
This tells a long story just in a amount of a few moments. Excellent work!

what a lovely short! It really made me feel what the main character was feeling. The only critique I have was that the falling dust was far too heavy, it looked more like light snow than dust... I thought it was perfect in the beginning when the particles were more subtle.

one of my instructors actually had the same remark after watching different clips from my film but I think I didn't go back to change this scene because it was so close to the deadline. Thank you for the critique and for watching

I'm speechless.
The heavy and sadness-driven breathing made a tear roll down my cheek- and by the end, I was shaking. That was beautiful. A true masterpiece if I've ever seen one. When I feel lonely, I'll come here, ad remember that I am not the only one- that Malcom's pain is felt throughout the world.
Also, the scene on the train- the final one, I believe, is absolutely beautiful. The way the sun shines in.....
