Description
"Disconnect" (2011) is an animated film I created/directed, exploring themes of depression and loneliness. The protagonist - Malcolm - struggles with his inability to connect with the world and the people around him.This was my graduation film for Emily Carr and took about 8 months to complete. To date it's the largest project I've worked on. I feel I could have done better, but I'm still very proud I what I managed to accomplish.

We cut ourselves off from the world, the people becoming only faceless dolls that we feel neither Sympathy nor Empathy for. Our lives filled with only Apathy, and Entropy. We exist, only to exist, and we die without any purpose or meaning within it.
Only when one can feel, only when one can Sympathize and Empathize, and the blank faceless mass of the dolls become define can we truly live, can we truly be human, can we truly live in peace and content.

amyanimalover showed me this and we are both on the same course. Your sound effects and music really transform the animation and make it professional. Unfortunately we have to make do with this by ourselves and we don't know any musicans or anyone who can help. Just goes to show how different these courses can be. I love the colour palette & it's nice to watch something that is hard hitting and not happy go lucky. Can I ask what mark you was awarded for this? It is perfectly fine if you don't want to state on here though!

I actually almost had to do the music and sound effects myself because my first sound designer quit at the last minute. I ended up rushing to record a bunch of stuff and was worried I wouldn't be able to finish my film on time. In the end though, one of my friends sent me the contact information for one of the sound designers she ended up not going with for her film. I got the sound effects and music finished about 2 weeks before the film was due.
You can always post on Craigslist for sound designers and musicians, a lot of my friends found their sound designers that way. I first looked for sound students at other schools which is where I found my first sound designer....but sometimes they don't have time to work on your project or end up not being as professional as you thought they were. Also, as a student you don't have a big budget for music or sound design, so sometimes you can get grants or work out deals like doing an art trade or some other work to compensate them for their time and efforts. Just be up front about your situation, act professionally, and find a compromise that works for you both.Β
I actually don't remember the mark I got for this lol. It was definitely an 'A' but I don't remember what %. But while I was working on my film, I wasn't really concerned with what mark I would get. I just wanted to make sure I finished it on time, that other people understood it, and that I was happy with the final result. I for sure got at least 1 of my 3 goals because I finished on time, but I was never really sure if people fully understood it, and there are still things in the film that I'll never be satisfied with.Β
I think the main thing is to not worry about what mark you will get. Just focus on your passion to animate, your story telling, your editing, your composition, etc... and always show it to people at every step of the way so you can figure out what you need to change to make it better. But don't let people dictate how you should tell your story, it's your story and you know what you want to say. Just observe the way people react to what you show them and listen to their comments, and that will tell you what you need to change or emphasize to make your film's story clear and understandable.
And remember to have fun, sleep, and eat lol.

It's not from a pre-existing sound track. The music, sfx, etc. was created for the film by my sound designer. I don't think she made a longer version of the music /or named it.
