Beautiful.

How long did it take & what tools did you use?

I have a sword hilted with Bone, but it isn't nearly so pretty.

LOL thank you very much, that wasnt easy to make as the dimensions on the back had to be exact to fit the pommel and tang of the sword

It is great to see real Norse-inspired designs, rather that the unfortunate Celto-Victorian knot-work that so often mars an otherwise well crafted re-creation. Serviceable and beautiful, just the way a wealthy viking would have liked it - your grip puts the rest of the sword to shame. Quality work!

Beautiful work! What kind of bone is that?

Bonecarverpm In reply to GreenwickPress [2011-06-16 18:10:17 +0000 UTC]

i had a large piece of giraffe bone that was large enough to make the two blanks from. It carves very nicely though Giraffe bone does suffer from lengthwise fractures if your not careful ,those can be a pain if you dont see them!

WOW, this is great! I guess, the owner will not use it, otherwise I imagine, he get some blisters! But he carving is wounderful!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Bonecarverpm In reply to Fabric-ant [2010-12-31 19:56:56 +0000 UTC]

thats his plan once he has the scabbard done, its actually more comfortable to hold then it looks the carvings are actually very smoothly rounded with not really sharp edges. so it gives traction without abrading the hand.

thank you very much!

Thank you very much Wodenswolf ,ive not yet mastered the nordic styles of interwoven patterns and zoomorphics. It still knots up my brain before i can get it to go and do what i need in the space that i have. still trying though!
I admire your skill with the knotworks a lot.

Again thank you !

Simply gorgeous work, though I didn't know that giraffe bone was an option. Still, beautiful work! Maybe if I ever make a sword I'll be asking for a carved bone handle.

Bonecarverpm In reply to kitten42 [2010-12-24 16:37:07 +0000 UTC]

Giraffe bone is not a Common material but when it is available i grab it, as its very wide and thick, so it can be made into a lot of different things, other wise i would have to laminate several pieces together and thats not fun.Would be happy to help carve it for you! when you make it leave off the end piece so that its easier to fit the grips to the sword.

kitten42 In reply to Bonecarverpm [2010-12-28 14:34:45 +0000 UTC]

Oooh, thanks! Leaving the pommel off is easy enough, I'll just finish it once the grip is in place. Of course, I'm going to have to find a place with a hydraulic trip hammer or something around here first.

Bonecarverpm In reply to kitten42 [2010-12-28 17:10:44 +0000 UTC]

FAH! trip hammer, do it the old fashioned way, coal fired heat, a hammer and anvil and a whole lot of sweat ......... good luck finding a trip hammer!

I live near a university with a metal arts division, it COULD happen. Right now I've only got a propane forge and a 100 lb farrier's anvil, and I want pattern welding, darnit!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Bonecarverpm In reply to kitten42 [2010-12-28 22:14:20 +0000 UTC]

add oxygen and you can do it, that added heat would do well to help you with the pattern welding. Now all you need are some fire brick and you could make your own gas oven that you could channel the propane into and make a gas forge. I know there are sites online that give directions on how to make them.

kitten42 In reply to Bonecarverpm [2010-12-28 23:30:56 +0000 UTC]

Well, I already have a full propane forge, considering that I shoe horses for a profession. It's just such an oxidizing flame that large surface forge welding is really miserable. Even small welds on bar shoes can use quite a bit of Borax. I'm considering using a brake drum and an air blower to make a coal forge in my garage at this point. At the moment I have a husband and a sledgehammer in place of a trip hammer, but I'm slowly training him for two man (two human? ;D) striker team.
