Description Though small and slow paced, the Pygmy Basilisk is as deadly as any other member of its family. All basilisks are armed with a fatal poison, but the Pygmy's poison is particularly fast acting and strong. The effects of a basilisk's poison are easy identifiable, in a matter of seconds the victim start to display a hardening of the muscle along with a noticeable discoloration of the entry wound area followed by a rigor mortis like state of paralysis. The articulations lock in place, the muscles harden in such an extreme way that it even leads to bones breaking and finally the victim dies from a cardiorespiratoryΒ  arrest. There is no known cure for this poison and its intensity and violence are so extreme that lead to the belief that basilisks are magical creatures, capable of turning its victims to stone. The basilisk's poison is a defense secreted by its skin and it must get inside a victims bloodstream to act, which is why most basilisk have spikes on its bodies along with sharp claws.

Amazing scales and realistic tones! How long did it take for you to paint the details of the head?
Also what sort of method do you use to get the outline looking sharp?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Bonekrishna In reply to Mearns [2017-09-09 05:52:33 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm... I don't really know how long it took me to paint the details on its head because I honestly just painted it without thinking about it. It wasn't an immediate thing at least, I just did what I always do and kept adding on top of it until I felt it was enough. I didn't follow a tight schedule while working on this guy and I even left it aside for a few months every now and then, now that I think about I think I first started painting this guy last year. If I were to try and put all the hours I worked on this piece together I would say probably about 2 weeks of intense work, something around that. And about making it look sharp, I just painted and erased until I felt it was enough. No big secret. What you can do is, after achieving the sharpness you want you can lock your layer transparency or work with clipping masks to avoid having to sharpen it over again.

It's good to know that you also take time with paintings! It looks amazing.
Wouldn't you get intimidated trying to make sure the believability of all that shading and toning matches up with the high amount of detail? Or do you just freely tweak things along the way?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Bonekrishna In reply to Mearns [2017-09-09 21:41:44 +0000 UTC]

I always get intimidated by everything! Specially when I start a painting, but as I go on painting I start to build up trust and get more bold. With the exception of a few particular cases, I usually have only a faint idea of what I'm going for so I develop a clearer mental image while I'm painting. It isn't the best method at all and all the guessing can sometimes completely kill the painting, but I find it really hard to make these kind of decisions before I start working. It's like getting immersed on a good book or movie, the further I go the more I feel like I may know what I'm doing. But I'm usually just a hair's breadth away from total despair!

Insane details as usual. Here's a weird question: why photorealism?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Bonekrishna In reply to B1G-CR1ME [2017-09-08 19:50:58 +0000 UTC]

I've always wanted to see real images of unreal things. Or at least something like an impossible photo, like a photorealistic painting of a dinosaur since they don't exist anymore for us to take photos of them. But mostly because I'm a weird guy!
