I've had some teachers also saying the smudging is fudging line... and i don't think it's that bad! Some pieces gain more from it, like some others gain more from crosshatching... depends on how an artist does it! I like shading... crosshatching my pieces i feel they gain too much dark tones... so i prefer shading... but everyone can have a different technique and choice.
