Description

“Not too shabby you guys!” Tinaaki complimented with a smile as she crouched by their haul. The metal bucket gleamed with fresh fish, and each tokota had their final catch displayed proudly at their feet. Tinaaki gave a bright laugh at their antics before focusing back on the bucket, giving it a good shake to settle the fish and lifting it slightly to test its weight.

Earlier in the week, she and a few other handlers had bumped into each other at the village’s market and had started to small talk. Someone had eventually mentioned a desire to train their tokotas a bit more, wanting them to get a bit more experience out in the beautiful wilderness. Lo and behold, the other three trainers expressed a similar wish, and so “Training Team 000” (as Charlotte had manically crowed, heroic pose and all) was born.
For their first training session, they decided to start simple and figured a good fishing session was in order. The weather was bright and agreeable and the fish just seemed to be teeming under the ice.
Duchess, Captain, Ragnar, Devona, and Sentinel had cleared a large amount of snow from the surface of the ice, allowing Tinaaki to score the area for the opening. She was able to cut a good portion away, but Devona helped finally break through with her brute strength and weight. Barring Devona, Duchess was the largest of the group and had descended into the chilly waters first. Ragnar slipped in next and Captain followed soon after. It had taken some cajoling, but Devona finally took the plunge with Sentinel, keeping a watchful eye on everyone else the entire time, being the last.
Tinaaki had reclined on the ice beside the hole, content to watch the tokotas try their hand at fishing through the bright water. She had just diverted her attention back to the firm snow banks on land where the other handlers were securing their tacks when Captain’s head burst from the hole, a grin evident on his face despite the wriggling fish between his teeth.
Captain proved to be the most confident of the “recruits”, diving elegantly into the water and hitting his mark almost every time. Of course, his lucky teddy bear might have had something to do with it, as it silently cheered him on from the sidelines.
While Captain was the most outgoing, both Duchess and Ragnar were extremely skilled as well. The graceful merle teamed up wonderfully with the bearmarked tawny, one driving and corralling the fish while the other swam in for the kill from below, with additional support from Sentinel occasionally.
All three of them, Duchess, Captain, and Ragnar, now sat and yipped happily to each other on top of the ice, a few of their catches at their paws. Despite it being their first time working together, they already seemed to be quite close with a natural comradery most packs only dreamed about.
Devona, bless her heart, was enthusiastic, but not as successful as her smaller companions. Her bigger size made it a bit more difficult to navigate the waters and to chase the fish down, so her haul was a bit smaller than the others. Still, despite the difficulties, she seemed to remain in good spirits and just seemed happy to be working with others.
Sentinel, on the other hand, seemed a bit distant, even now as everyone gathered together to compare and rack up their catches. He had spent a bit more time observing everyone in the water before helping out and playing a more supporting role in their catches. Still, while rotating tasks with Duchess and Ragnar, he had managed to snag a decent number of fish.
“All right you guys,” Tinaaki called as she tethered the full bucket of fish to Devona to be pulled to the shore, “Time to head back!” She turned and began walking back to shore, heading towards the fire the other handlers had built to help dry off their tokotas, and rolled her eyes as a few whines broke out behind her.
They didn’t last long though, as playful barking and yips soon sounded as Ragnar, Duchess, and Captain raced towards the shore, their dripped coats spiking and sparkling in the midday sun. Sentinel seemed content to trot by her side, but even Devona began to move more quickly towards the others, her tongue lolling out happily as the metal bucket scraped behind her.
Tinaaki smiled as Poseidon and Charlotte began to make their way towards her, both undoubtedly curious about the success of the trip. Looking down at their catch, Tinaaki was fairly confident that this “team’s” success would continue, and that their tokotas would only continue to learn, grow, and become even closer from here on out.
Though, she thought to herself as Devona shook herself to rid her fur of the excess water and accidentally getting it all over the smaller human (much to Poseidon and Charlotte’s amusement), maybe they should go hunting next time instead.
