EDIT 3/19/10: Added a grungy layer...for no reason. lol. just think it looks more badassHey guys! Back with another one...This as you can tell is far from polished nor will I ever really finish it. This was simply a fun break and a self challenge. Well, my friend and I were talking about the Thor and Captain America movies coming soon...and I thought that for Captain America to work, that they're going to need a better design than what we have now.
Calm down purists lol. Anyway, yeh, I can't imagine what we've got now running around the battlefield and so I came up with a more modern design.
I think one of the old school comics featured a more G.I version of Captain America, and this is a nod in taht direction. I wanted to give a futuristic yet basic soldier look, with the all American flair of Captain America. There are a few nods here towards his most famous current look:
The star in the middle, the A on his head and of course, his shield. Which by the way, I never understood. A shield is for DEFENSE. Not for headbashing. But anyway, I couldn't think of a suitable weapon...Staff? Meh. Gun like that newer Captain America? Too malicious for a hero. A sword? Not gonna cut it for a soldier. I thought about a set of batons, but that seems off too. So I decided to leave the shield as it is (unfortunately) iconic to the character as I strip his original look. Okay.
So onto the design:
I gave him a beret because it's pretty standard on uniforms, and decided to leave the A on the top because at least its not on his FOREHEAD like before. *shivers* I also had put on his traditional wings but I scrapped it because I'd always hated it, and even though I wanted to leave some nods towards his past, wings are something I could live without. Anyway, he's wearing a super awesome material that covers his whole body, almost like chain mail except comfortable and expandable like spandex. Should have put a texture but whatever. On top he's got this awesome bullet proof vest with knife ready on his chest for various situations. He's got some supa cool shoulderpads connected and sits on his upper body like a saddle or something. Then he's got some dog tags, but whose names are on there? Who knows. Not me. Captain America does.
Then onto his belt, he's got some pouches and what not, and then a metal piece that says "S.H.I.E.L.D". The first avenger represents, yo. Originally I had a bigger slab on metal that said FREEDOM and looked bad-ass, but a friend said it looked too flamboyant even for Captain America and was more like a wrestling belt. Oh well. His knees are covered by a set of...kneepads connected to some awesome steel toed boots. OH. and on his back has a freakin awesome looking eagle.
Gave him a bit of a scruff, and was gonna put some aviator shades on but wanted to showcase the blue eyes blondeness look that makes you a real american (apparently).
Of course, the colors were desaturated because a bright blue and red man running across the battlefield is an easy target.
What else...his gloves also have a mettalic piece to reflect bullets in case he puts his hand to face or something. Idk. lol.
Okay, so that's that.
I know the anatomy is off or something, don't need to point it out...and also the feet might be off...looks a bit funny to me. lol. And then yes, his hand looks too blocky. Whatever lmao.
Okay. So to recap: I drew the redesign because I challenged myself to come up with a cool design as a result of talking to one of my nerdy friends in response to the new movie that will be coming soon.
All digital. Oh, and the pose may seem familiar because I used the Captain America game art from "Marvel Vs. Capcom 2." Where else to start a base from the original?
Captain America is owned by Marvel.
This design was done by me, Bonny John, and is owned by said person who is me, again.

I like it. Obvious Captain America, but modern, realistic, but still cool.

Thanks! I know I can do a much better job if I reattempted this, now that I know more about the character and this was done a while back!

this would be a pretty cool redesign for an alternate world where he gets his start fighting in afghanistan, or one of the more recent wars. I like the design a lot, and i'm a bit of a cap fan myself. just had a crazy idea, it would also work really well if they had a universe where captain america was more like a brand, and they had a psuedo-military-police force walking the streets that way. like the judges from 2000 a.d.

Yeah, what you said is kinda what I went for; something a little more "now". Certainly, the grungy layer I put over the piece reminds you of the Middle Eastern color pallete (and I'd hate to simply label a certain area to a color like grungy tan but it is true to an extent) and that was unintentional.
Your idea sounds pretty good. This suit in specific doesn't look all that unique to him; I could totally imagine a whole force of officers wearing this uniform. I kinda designed this look to seem practical and something that a soldier might actually wear.
Anyway, thanks a lot for the comment and fave. I've been getting a decent amount of feedback and faves on it so I'm considering to go back into here and put some more effort and detail!

No, I don't mind at all. And thanks so much for asking permission! There are a few good souls out there that respect art after all! lmao
Send me a link to the posters when they're up! Perhaps you can give an ol' shout out at the end of the post with maybe a link back to my page?

i definitely think this design is more practical than the traditional one. looks more like a real soldier. i'd like to see him fight snake. heheheh..
I've never been a big fan of captain america though. what exactly are his powers?

Yay thank you! I love this design lmao...Not to be biased on my own work...but I've NEVER liked Captain America's look.
A Snake fight would be amazingly epic, but Snake would win definitely
I believe Cap'n America's powers are...super strength...and super stamina? lmao...Could be more to it...Was never interested.
HOWEVER, with this design out, I would definitely care to learn more about the hero! lol!
