Description Apollo
One of the 12 Olympians. God of prophecy, healing, music, poetry, archery. Often associated with the sun and light (=truth?). Son of Zeus and Leto, twin brother to the goddess Artemis.
Attributes include the laurel, bow and arrow, raven, lyre. The python represents the site of his Delphic Oracle.
Not the luckiest guy in love, quite a few of his lovers ended up dead and turned into plants. Etiologies for the cypress, hyacinth, laurel.

Excuse the eye-bleeding colors.
Google references for pretty much everything except Apollo himself, which is why the anatomy is questionable and why I sort of quit halfway through painting it.

Media: Pencil, watercolors, Gimp for brightness/contrast adjustments.

This is great *O*
Good job on his atributes such as the hyacynth, the laurel crown, and the lyre. The snake is great too, I believe represents Phyton herself?

Wonderful picture, though his son, Aesclepius, was the god of medicine.

Thank you! And thanks for the heads up about the "medicine" part; "healing" would've been better (and I'll change it in the description).

Nice art! I would like to ask for permission if it's okay to have your art be part of my list on my site? I am looking forward to feature some great gods and goddesses on my site. You can check out my site here, at the bottom. Of course I'll put a credit that this is your own art.
Hope you'll agree! \(^_^)/

I'm minoring in Classics, and I had a pretty great professor for my Mythology class, so yay! Rekindling my childhood interest!

vodkabears In reply to Boolsajo [2011-07-17 01:51:02 +0000 UTC]

D Awesome! The classics program at my old college is apparently tanking and disappearing forever, which makes me sad. D: A good friend of mine is a Classics major and pagan and has lots, lots to say about the gods.

I believe he dedicated some mead he brought over to Odin off of our balcony.

Boolsajo In reply to vodkabears [2011-07-17 03:20:06 +0000 UTC]

:[ It's always sad when a nice major is in danger of disappearing (as is the case with UCLA's Applied Linguistics, I think).

Ahah, libations for Odin? That's pretty interesting! He sounds cool

vodkabears In reply to Boolsajo [2011-07-18 01:41:47 +0000 UTC]

*sigh* Yeahh... Trinity was not big on the classics, apparently.

He's a rather interesting fellow, yes. You'd probably enjoy talking to him.

Plants, of all things. Tragic. Diggin' the snake.

Hmm hmm hmm. Try using more colors for the shadows and stuff so each item won't be isolated via color.

PONTIFICATION

Boolsajo In reply to el-posto [2011-07-12 00:52:37 +0000 UTC]

Hrmm...I didn't notice dA ate up and shat my reply into some dark void...

Anyway. Lols, yeah. It's sad.
I also like the snake but you can totally tell I was like screw the damn scales...bah.

Thanks for the advice! I'm going to try to experiment with the other deities, hopefully (though I dread being actually serious about anything). I really do need to practice all this color theory and contrast and artsy shit...ugh...
