Immortal no moreChpt 1: The Girl in the Jar
Keith ran through the halls of shield Corp's halls looking left and right, not making a sound. He held his rifle ready at all times, only lowering to check corners. Stealth was the key to his mission and he couldn't be found out until his deed was done. Quickly he covered ground in the large labyrinth of a science facility. Halls and corridors went on without end and the ceiling was high and uneven in an attempt to add some atmosphere to the dull white walls.
Seeing another corner Keith slowed down and checked it. He had bugged the cameras to run their footage in loops but the guards were always vigilant. After confirming that there were no guards down the hall Keith tossed a three pound ball of greyish putty on the ceiling where the guards wouldn't see it, this would be his fifth time doing this in the last ten minutes. Continuing his run down the hall Keith finally found what he was looking for, a door marked D43, with the words "Hazardous chemicals authorized personnel only", underneath it.
Keith took out a card with a wire attached to it. Plugging the wire into his helmet Keith went to put the hacker key card into the slot. Suddenly the door clicked, Keith backed into the opposite hall wall. A middle aged man in a janitors outfit came through the door and looked around; making sure no one was in sight. Not seeing anything anyone he waved into the room and six more men in lab-coats came out. They were all quiet and looked around suspiciously as if they didn't trust their own look-out.
As they left the halls and disappeared down different corridors Keith let out a sigh. That had been the third close call of the day. Falling from the high ceiling Keith went to hack the door but saw that there was no need, the lock lights were still green signaling that the door was still unlocked. "Nothings ever this easy", Keith thought to himself as he opened the door slowly.
The room was dark, lit only by computer screens and a single flashing green light above the man sized stasis tube. Keith ignored the tube for now instead focusing on the computers. Plugging in a PDA Keith set it on copying the hard drives of the systems, while it was busy he set himself on the physical documents of the room; taking pictures of everything on paper or easel's.
As he was taking pictures he heard a tapping sound but ignored it thinking it was simply something in the ventilation. Suddenly the tapping turned into a loud wump, as if someone had smacked glass in anger. Turning around and raising his gun Keith looked around but did not see anything but the test tube. The tapping came back and Keith was sure it was coming from the test tube. Slowly inching towards the tube Keith studied the tube, it was large enough to hold a man and it had thick tubes feeding it water and a pale brownish substance. Distracted by the tubes Keith nearly walked into the tube but stopped himself before he did. Looking into the tube Keith stumbled back and raised his gun haphazardly, inside the tube floated a beautiful horned woman supported by only a gas mask for oxygen.
"I bet that's how you introduce yourself to all of the pretty women you meet", the woman said, clearly amused with Keith's reaction.
"What the hell are you", Keith said in a heated whisper.
The woman folded her arms, annoyed with Keith's response. "No nice to meet you, no how are you doing, not even a what's your name", the woman said sulkily, "my names Karen by the way, nice to meet you to."
Keith lowered his gun; he wasn't sure what to make of the situation. He had just discovered the scientist experiment of the century and he had just offended her. His PDA beeped to signal that it was had reached its capacity. Keith turned to take his PDA; quickly he scanned the rest of the room. There was nothing else important to look into and his escape window was still open but not for long, he didn't have time to talk to Karen. Turning to the door Keith started to leave when he heard a whimpered plea, "don't leave me".
Keith turned around and looked at Karen. Her face was barely lit by the computer lights but he could see that she was crying, even with the water engulfing her. Keith had seen this kind of face before, lonely, scared and trapped with no hope. Keith groaned to himself as he walked towards the tube.
"I'm going to open this tube and were both going to get out of here", Keith said in a commanding tone, "After that I don't care what you do".
Karen looked at Keith with a stunned expression, too emotional to reply. Keith motioned for Karen to back away from the center of the tube and raised his gun. With a silent shot the glass exploded and water poured everywhere. Karen spilled out of the tube. Karen got up without injury which surprised Keith but before he could say anything the alarms began to go off. Quickly taking out his last ball of clay Keith lobbed it into the center of the room and ran, Karen following close behind.
"We need to move fast", Keith said, "They'll be on us any second."
On cue rifle fire was heard from behind them and ricochet was heard from the front. Keith went to his knees, slid around, fired his rifle at the enemy behind him and went back to his feet without breaking to stop. Running to catch up with Karen four guards came from corridors in front of them and five from behind. Taking cover from both sides in a nearby corridor Keith motions for Karen to take cover while he takes out the enemy. From his position a wall is in front of him with the hall going left and right of him, gunfire coming from both sides.
"Were in trouble", Keith said above the gunfire.
"We can take them", Karen said confidently.
Keith turned around to fire back at the enemy, wound but getting nicked by a round in return. Turning back into the door to avoid getting hit Keith looked towards Karen, or at least where she was a second ago. "Wait, she said we", Keith turned back out the door just in time to see a corpse fly across the hallway and hit a guard. Screams of fear and shock were heard above rampant gunfire and the smell of burnt flesh was evident. Turning to get a better view of the hallway Keith let out a loud curse as he saw Karen with red scaled arms tear off a guards arm bare handed. In only ten seconds Karen had killed five guards, Keith was in awe and fear. The other guards weren't distracted for long though, they immediately concentrated fire on Karen.
"Shit that hurts", Karen said as rounds bounced off her arms. Taking a deep breath Karen shot a fireball at out her mouth at one of the guards, which promptly burst into flames on contact and began cursing in pain. The guard next to him backed away and through a small canister grenade at Karen, who looked at it. With a loud boom and a bright flash the canister exploded and blinded Karen.
Keith had recognized what the canister was and closed his eyes in time. Once the canister had gone off he shot the other three guards as they were about to fire at Karen. Three nearly simultaneous thuds were heard as Keith went to check up on Karen.
Karen is thrashing around in a frenzied state. Blinded and deaf she is a wild animal on the loose.
"I can't get close to her like this", Keith thought, "I need to knock her out." Taking out a stun baton Keith swiftly hits Karen three times, twice to the chest and once to the head to make sure she went down. "Time to get out of here."
