Description Well this one is definitely "new" and strongly "experimental". I'm aware many won't like it or even find this image "disturbing".... Anyway I tried to recreate some deep and strong emotional feeling... and not a just pleasant image...

NO POSTWORK
The image effect is NOT the result of some filtering in Photoshop or the Gimp, but is plainly and purely an effect achieved with materials and light in Reality/Luxrender: so I can swear there's no postwork apart from converting the image from .png to .jpg.

In this render I didn't use any DOF or motion blur. There's something else here that re-create the out-of-focus effect.

If someone is interested or curious about how the effect was achieved I'll gladly give further details.
[EDIT: there's a breakdown of the scene making here [link] ]

INSPIRATION
The image effect was inspired by some work by the german artist Gerhard Richter [link] and [link] .
There's also a little bit of inspiration form Edward Munch's "The Scream" (in the hands and face pose).

Just looked at your tut for this, then looked at this. I gotta say that's one awesome image, very nicely done and an awesome exploration as to what you can do in DS/Reality/Luxrender

This is really a testament to your commitment to finding new ways to create optical illusions "in camera". Very ingenious. Would you post the "breakdown" in the Tutorial gallery? I'm sure a lot of people would love to see how you created this haunting image. Thanks.

Nice work, but I think I would have put the focused point on the face (around the mouth) instead of the elbow x)

Maybe you are right, but, considering the way out-of-focus effect was generated (not through the camera's DOF, but through a set of layered refracting glass panes placed in front of the figure) I assure you that the focus is not very easily controllable...
Furthermore the more out-of-focus face can suggest some accentuated motion in that body part (as if the woman were scrolling her head....)

That's an impressive 'effect' - did the render crawl to halt with all that refracting and all going on?

borodin3 In reply to SimonJM [2012-03-20 22:42:41 +0000 UTC]

Much less than I expected and was afraid of...
Average speed was about 30 kS/p (my PC specs is a Intel Core2 Quad CPU Q9550 @2.83 GHz - not very much fast comparing to the most recent CPUs) and the render converged rather quickly. I let it run for about 24 hrs...

This image does give off a bit of that gothic vibe. With the blowing curtains and her night gown it almost seems like she's at an asylum, trying in vain to hide from whatever is haunting her. Yep, that is a pretty scary idea--and no, I won't sleep tonight.

Oh, and do tell us more about the effect you used! I don't know a lot about visual art but I'm willing to learn.

borodin3 In reply to bryte-rockx [2012-03-20 21:55:32 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for your comment skindral.
The effect is made out of several reflecting (and refracting) glass panes in front of the figure (11 glass panes to be exact). The camera is just catching up the reflections (and refractions) from the glass panes (like in a mirror) and not pointing directly to the figure. That's it...

Wow--so you were going for a really organic effect if I understood that correctly? Sounds like way more effort that just adding a photoshop filter--but the result looks much more real for it.

I know that photoshop would have been a more easy way to go. But I try as much as I can to stick to Reality... ... just to have some better knowledge on how it works...

"... I try as much as I can to stick to Reality... ... just to have some better knowledge on how it works..."

Meh!
Don't bother.
Reality is overrated.
Just pick one you like and stay in it.
