Description From the Monongahela Valley
To the Mesabi Iron Range
To the coal mines of Appalachia
The story's always the same
Seven hundred tons of metal a day
Now sir, you tell me the worlds changed
Once I made you rich enough,
Rich enough to forget my name.

A speedpaint to illustrate Bruce Springsteen's song "Youngstown," something of a rust belt anthem. About 3 hours. (Does that still count as a speedpaint? haha)

Referenced from a gorgeous old photograph, which gets all the credit for the composition of this.

That was a wonderful song! And I hate that the industry in the Rust Belt isn't being helped enough. Maybe not with coal power, but some other kind of power generated mill to process steel. "You load sixteen tons/ what do you get?/ another day older and deeper in debt/ Saint Peter don't you call me 'cause I can't go/ I owe my soul to the company store."

I keep trying to think of ways that the rust belt's cities could be improved while moving them into the 21st century. Trying to think of population decline in positive terms, consolidating and improving infrastructure, adding lots of green spaces, ensuring survival for the future rather than focusing on a return to the past. And when looking for examples of cities trying to do this, I came across none other than Youngstown, Ohio, [link] which apparently is trying to reinvent itself as a college town.

I don't think it will work for these cities to pour all their money into trying to get their industries back, because I think ultimately they won't be successful. But if they invest that money into making the lives of people who stay in the city better then maybe they will get somewhere.

*Sigh* I really hope they can work something out. I love a lot of those Upper Midwest states, and I hate to hear of them suffering, and their cities in decline and disrepair. I've met a ton of nice people from those states. I have a real curiosity about them, and I wish the best for them. I know that some may not succeed in this endeavor, but let's hope that the majority can manage that change in population.
