"The Empire was foolish to pass on the Mark IIs, and they got to see these beauties contribute to their defeat. Now the Mark IIIs get to do it once again!" - Lando Calrissian commenting on the Assault Frigate Mark III
The third entry to the Assault Frigate line, the Assault Frigate Mark III was introduced to the New Republic's fleets to replace their aging Mark I and Mark II predecessors. The Assault Frigate line hails back to the Clone Wars when Rendili StarDrive endeavored to upgrade the aging Dreadnaughts into newer warships. The Assault Frigates remained in Imperial Service before being phased out around 16 BBY, the Rebellion acquiring a large number of them for their fleets. Several sympathetic engineers at Rendili decided to develop the Mark II Assault Frigates, allegedly for the Empire but the Empire passed on the designs. The Engineers then passed the designs to the Rebels, giving the Rebels a brand new assault frigate they could use against the Empire. The Mark IIs became a regular sight within the Rebel fleet. When the New Republic rose to power, Rendili StarDrive began work on a new variant of the Assault Frigate, the Mark III. The Mark III was introduced to the New Republic fleets in 10 ABY, just in time to face the reborn Emperor. The Mark IIIs have remained a part of the New Republic fleet ever since, even into the Shadow Wars.
The Mark IIIs were built upon the highly effective Mark II model and keeps most of its bulbous frame while adding an elongated engine section and expanding its weapons systems. The Mark IIIs don't have hangars, relying on their built in turbolaser and point defense batteries to fend off enemy starfighters. Assault Frigates are seldom deployed alone and almost always serve as escort for larger craft such as Star Destroyers and Cruisers. The Assault Frigates aren't very fast but are highly maneuverable due to their rounded frames, and are notoriously difficult to outflank, capable of bringing their formidable broadside batteries to bear within seconds.
The Assault Frigate line is notable in that they've never been given a proper class name, often being referred to as Rendili Assault Frigates or simply Assault Frigates.

Never understood how these were developed from dreadnaught class cruisers. There is no resemblance to them at allΒ
