Designed as a vital defensive craft, the Sentinel was originally Somtaaw's answer to the Shield Class Defender. However, the Somtaaw approach to defense was a little different than most. During the Beast War, Somtaaw engineers devised a unique technology: Force Field technology. A squadron of 12 Sentinels could work together to form a defensive barrier around a capital class vessel that could repel most kinds of weapons fire. The Sentinel served this defensive role for almost three years after the Beast War until its weakness was discovered. It was determined that a concentrated sensor sweep could disrupt the Sentinel's projectors and result in the field getting shut down. This almost saw the Sentinel retired early but then some of the engineers hit upon an interesting idea...
A team of engineers aboard the Kuun-Lan decided to use the Sentinel as a stationary defense gun of sorts similar to the ones encountered by the Kushan in the Karos Graveyard. The Sentinels had the force-field projectors removed, their guns enlarged, their engines replaced with a single burn model meant for probes, and their cockpits replaced with a remote AI suite that could be controlled by a Processor, Carrier, or Command Ship. These modified sentinels would be deployed into resource rich areas and would react to any hostile craft within range, defending the resourcers until reinforcements could arrive. This became the first of the Hiigarans' stationary defense platforms.
The Sentinels would remain in service as stationary platforms until the deployment of the Sentry Class Gun Platforms, at which point the Sentinels would be retired from service. A few Sentinels, in both their original force-field fighter form and their stationary form, are on display at the Faal-Corum Museum on Hiigara.
