Description 5/13/2016 Thank you to everypony who's played this thus far at Everfree North West 2016!

(Small update 4/26/2016: Thanks to everyone who has downloaded this game! Please consider clicking on that Paypal link. If everyone who has downloaded it thus far tossed just 2 bits my way, my financial woes would be gone. lol. But you don't have to feel obligated to donate. Again, thank you!)

UPDATE 4/21/2016

Super Mario 3 is now ponified!

This was a truly IMMENSE project. Had I realized the scope of this project in its entirety, I do not think I would have put forth so much effort--nevertheless, the deed is done.

I want to send a special shout out to Lizardninja8115 for the line-art he did in Pony Poki Panic 2 and Super Alicorn Sisters. His near-weekly updates kept me motivated to finish this project. I also was able to glean ideas from some of his work.

Thank you for your assistance, Lizardninja8115 !
There are further acknowledgements in the download files.

You will need an SNES emulator. (This site links to several emulators: www.emulator-zone.com/doc.php/… ) It is also a good idea to actually own a physical or digital copy of Super Mario All-stars in one form or another for the sake of fairness to the original programmers who put the game together--show them some love too.

And, folks, I am in a rough spot economically at the moment. Please consider a donation.

Thank you!

*Please note that donating is not a requirement for downloading. I am not selling anything. And, I know bronies are extremely generous, but seriously, please don't personally donate more than $25.00.

UPDATE 12/22/2015

Merry Christmas. SMB2 is now done! There is no in-game boxart for it yet because it's a pain to import images into the game-select menu. Just ignore where it says "coming soon." lol IT'S COMEING NOW!

Read me and other files in download link.

Update 11/28/2015

SMB2 character sprites updated. Special thanks to lizardninja8115.deviantart.com… for creating the line-art and initial animations. I have finished fleshing them out and they look AMAZING in-game!

Some assets have not yet been ponified. The bosses have not yet been ponified. The palettes all look good and the playable characters get rainbowfied when charged for a super jump and when invincible. Check it out; it's cool!

Updtate 10/23/2015

Hello, everypony.

I have to get to a stopping point on the All-stars ponification. I've got a guy who's finishing up some animations for SMB2 and I've got some things in SMB3 I'd like to finish--basic animations and so forth. That said, does anyone here know how to use Tile Layer Pro or the SNES palette editor? If so, I could hand the project off to you (though I wouldn't recommend it).

This project has taught me why dev studios have teams and not individuals. I cannot believe the scope of what I've been able to thus far accomplish with the project. But, alas, I REALLY do need to step away from it at this point.

If you want to try its current iteration out, you can download it from here: www.mediafire.com/download/z6z…

I think a good stopping point will be having all the character animations done in SMB2 and basic standing animations done in SMB3. That will be my stopping point at any rate. I will update the ROM file when I get to that point. And, once I reach that point, I really do need to stop.

Thank you, everypony!

Update 10/22/2015

I have animations in bitmap form for the characters in SMB2 thanks to lizardninja8115.deviantart.com… . Though not not colored in yet, they are promising. He will be getting back to me in the next few weeks hopefully with a colored in bitmap.

I have also been able to figure out several of the sprites in SMB3. They are not as difficult to deal with as I originally though.

I will provide an updated ROM hopefully before the end of the year. This update should be a mostly completed game. I am still looking for employment, however. This is putting a damper on everything.

Thank you for your continued interest in this project.

Update 9/20/2015 6:57 PDT

PLEASE RE-DOWNLOAD THE ROM. lol. Mushroom and bad mushroom changed to muffin and baked bad respectively. Fireflower changed to flower of truth from season 2 episode 6 "The Cutie Pox."

www.mediafire.com/download/z6z…

There will be no more spur-of-the-moment changes. So don't worry about having to re-download it again unless someone out there finds a catastrophic error which requires my immediate attention.

Update 9/20/2015

I was having problems with the IPS patch, therefore I have included the SMC file. You will need an emulator to run the ROM. Google Snes9x or Zsnes to play the game.

Update!
9/19/2015

I have a playable demo available.
Only SMB1 and The Lost Levels are ponified. The other games are barely off the ground.

I need help with this project!

Go here to check it out!
www.mediafire.com/download/z6z…

Folks, I really don't know if I can spend any more time on this. I've got a lot on my plate at the moment and I need to focus on more important things. If you can help ponify this, please send me information in a private message with your experience in sprite modding. If you know how to alter in-game text and SPC audio, that would also be great! I've got a lot of real life matters such as unemployment which is a formidable demand on my time. Hence, for now, please consider this project on hiatus unless somepony out there can take the helm for a while.

i will say, this is a neat little rom hack for Mario All Stars. it would of been cool to see Super Mario World in the collection, and see how that would be in a ponified form. but eh

You can stream the game. I am not a jerk about it. But I had no idea someone had put it on an EPROM and was selling copies in a cartridge.

Welp, that's the risk you take when you release a rom as Public Domain, Someone is bound to make nbootlegs outta it and bypass the anti-piracy.

People did enjoy viewing it on my game stream during times I'm not streaming a long playthrough. ^^

So, do you have to patch it to an SMAS ROM, or is it prepatched?

All you have to do now is edit the text and change some of the remaining graphics until they don't say and reference Mario or Luigi anymore. There are Text Hacking Utilities at Zophar's Domain. You'll have to get DOSBox to make them work. Your friend can change the graphics and improve the title screens of Ponified Super Mario Bros. games. After the text change/title screen graphics for Super Pony-Pony Pokie Panic and minor VS Screen glitch sprite fix for Lyra, consider your project done. If you're not sure about the graphics, your friend on deviantart could help you.

I'm not sure if this is helpful or not, but i was looking in the Vram (Graphics Data) for Super Mario Bros 1 and Lost Levels and I managed to find an address that contained the names for the characters (Mario/Luigi). The values for the names are in address 0xB080. I did manage to edit this to say something else, but I could not find a way to make it stay permanent. I wonder if it requires not just a text editor, but maybe script (ASM) editing? I really have no idea. I'm new to the rom hacking scene so I might be wrong. (PS: I forgot to mention that the address is only for the names above the score and nothing else. I haven't found the rest of them yet. Sorry for not mentioning that.)

TheGamingPon-3 In reply to AlanDSSparkle [2016-07-12 18:41:19 +0000 UTC]

It does work. As long as you Homebrewed your Wii, PSP, etc. and know how to install the emulators and games, then it should work without any problem. I have a homebrewed Wii with a lot of emulators on it and this game functions perfectly on the snes one.

TP-Night [2016-04-23 19:35:26 +0000 UTC]

Now that this is done...
Are you planning on ponifying any other games?

And if so - which one will you do next?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Botchos In reply to TP-Night [2016-04-23 19:42:54 +0000 UTC]

Not sure if I will do this any more.

I was considering:

Shantae-GB
Revamping the Derpy hack of Zelda 3-SNES
Final Fantasy IV-SNES
Actraiser-SNES
OOT-N64

And there are a few others that escape my recollection.

Frankly, I think it would be better to create games from the ground up rather than working within the confines of limited hardware and software. Ponifying is interesting, but I think it's not as popular as it was a few years ago. So it may be time to move on.

TP-Night In reply to Botchos [2016-04-23 19:47:02 +0000 UTC]

all of those sound like interesting ideas, but maybe you're right, popularity might have dropped a bit over the years.

My thought was something like Gradius, LifeForce, Twinbee or any other game of that style, simply replace the "player" ship with a pegasus,
and maybe replace enemies with characters and objects from the show.

For example, a ponyfied TwinBee, but with Derpy, and collecting muffins instead of bells to power up.

TP-Night In reply to Botchos [2016-04-23 20:05:42 +0000 UTC]

would be awesome, but like you said, it might be time for something completely new instead of a re-skin.
But in the end, it's your choice, since you're the one doing most (or all?) of the work.

Here's how to create IPS patches:

Use Lunar IPS (found here: fusoya.eludevisibility.org/lip… ), Select Create IPS Patch,
Select the UNMODIFIED ROM, then the MODIFIED ROM, then save IPS patch as whatever you want to name it.
It's always wise to backup your ROMs beforehand just in case things don't go right.
After creating the patch, test it by applying the patch to the backed up UNMODIFIED ROM image then play it.

Regarding the hack, after finishing the graphics of the playable characters, someone should use HEX editing to modify the text.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Botchos In reply to melotini-peppakuraku [2016-01-06 07:47:39 +0000 UTC]

I did all that with Lunar IPS and there was a problem with the original ROM. I made several attempts but it couldn't be patched.

The in-game text appears to be compressed. If you can figure out how to edit the in-game text, please let me know.
