Description
Consider this a prologue to my eventual character review of defending Amy Rose, whom In my opinion is the most underrated and mistreated character in the entire Sonic franchise from both Sega and the fandom itself. Because it seems no matter what she does good or bad the fandom never lets her hear the end of her less than stellar moments. As a Sonic fan this has something that's bugged me for the longest time, every time someone reviews/references to talks about SA2/2006 or just Amy in general these two scenes are used as catalysts to overdemonize Amy as a mentally inept special needs person. In reality though is it really as bad as people make it seem?So on a first glance surface level it basically looks like Amy is stupid for not telling the difference between Sonic and two other characters of the same species, but here's the problem in Amy's defense. Amy's a young immature girl, OF COURSE she's going to be ditzy and airheaded when it comes to love, most kids or young teens are quite immature when it comes to falling in love, and Amy is basically an immature kid caught up in her own fantasies and desires, on a surface level this easily annoys a much more mature and older audience, but that's just because well it is annoying.. It doesn't matter how mature young teens may think they are there's always a level of immaturity somewhere, even if their maturity lies in different aspects. Amy is far from being a moron, in fact Amy is very self aware when it comes to the dangerous situations. Upon arriving to Prison island, she knows Eggman is up to no good, she even freaks out upon seeing Eggman.. Another thing is that Sonic does change colors upon going into different forms, so it's not out of the ordinary to assume Sonic just maybe in a different form, Shadow in SA2 is a Super Sonic recolor after all.
But here's the main problem I have with people's reaction to these, OTHER CHARACTERS MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE! In fact Dr Eggman himself mistakes Shadow for Sonic in the exact same way, even GUN at the beginning of the Hero's story at point blank range see Sonic face to face in their helicopter before Sonic escapes, yet still think Shadow and him are like the very next scene he's shown on TV. In the Sonic X adaption of Adventure 2 Chris Thorndyke mistakes Shadow for Sonic, why is only Amy criticized for this? Especially when you consider the fact both Amy and Eggman's mistakes were the same. The moment Amy walks up to both Shadow and Silver she thinks she has Sonic, but upon seeing their image instantly comes to the realization she found the wrong person.. THAT'S IT! Amy literally solved her own mistake and even acknowledges it y'know like a normal person would? So why on earth does the fandom act as if it's a big deal when even Amy herself realizes the mistake? It isn't like Amy played along with the fact she thinks they were Sonic being stretched out until the actual one appears, then she really would be stupid.. It was only a split second reaction caused by Amy's impulsive nature and instantly corrected after, but everyone acts as if she belongs in a special needs class. Eggman did the same thing upon seeing Shadow and he's the grown adult with a 300 IQ!!
They also bring up the fact Amy has possible color blindness. While I'm not going to throw this an an actual intent the way of actually stating true intent, the way this critique is presented seems like people associate colorblindess with stupidity and as if it's a problem (a problem as in Amy's mistake being stupid and not that it sucks to have) considering how much they claim she's stupid for doing it while using this assessment. Addressing she's colorblind makes their point about her being stupid for her mistake as inadvertently discrediting their own point as they're addressing an excuse for her to make that mistake to begin with. The Sonic fandom/reviewers/let's players do this a lot switching between Bi-Polar Mannerisms and I don't understand why that is, they either play into scenes or look too deep into something just to exaggerate its context. And people say the cartoon community takes things to deeply. It also boils down to people complaining/berating a character for a simple character flaw.
Sonictubers/Reviewers and Let's Players especially do this when it comes to Amy Rose who's the character that is singled out the most almost every single time it happens. Keep in mind these are also the same people who thinks Amy should've reacted when Elise kissed Sonic, when it would've played into their own narrative of her being a selfish git as she would've sacrificed Sonic's life out of pity jealousy..(This is also the same Amy who supported Sally and Sonic's relationship in the Archie Comics) It's almost like Amy isn't as bad as people say!! Then fans would complain she was selfish for doing that. Amy's always in a constant damned if she does, damned if she doesn't situation by the fandom and I have no idea why. It seems no matter what she does the fans will always find something about Amy or the series to complain about regardless of the context provided. This doesn't just happen to Amy, but various other fictional characters too, Amy just gets it when specifically applying the Sonic fanbase into account.
With Silver it was in a dark location, and dark areas are known to skew one's vision, plus Sonic was in the exact same area at the time she ran into Silver so it's not like she randomly picked a location out of the blew. This is also very indicative of the typical Doppleganger trope, where an obvious look alike are mistaken as the real thing. From a surface level lens it's obvious to the omniscient viewer.. In fact Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door does this same plot during it's 4th Chapter where all his party members think Doopliss is Mario, while the scenarios are played differently they still fall under the same trope. The fandom loves taking anything Amy does out of proportion to ludicrous levels. So much to the point they become literal parrots repeating the same things over and over again you can't use a surface level lens to take something out of context that's just stupid. it's just as stupid as people comparing their own age and maturity to that of a fictional character, when both maturity varies in people and you can't compare yourself to fiction.
In fact let's play out the clip of when Amy hugs Silver and corrects her mistake youtu.be/96DXe2A6-RU?t=23 0:23 to 0:28 (timestamp) What are Amy's exact words? "Hey you're not Sonic, Oh I'm sorry" Amy instantly realizes Silver isn't Sonic she didn't just go along with the idea Silver was Sonic, she instantly regretted her mistake as evident by her accidentally shoving Silver while covering her eyes in embarrassment. This is instantly followed by her realizing Silver missed the person he was looking for, and realizing someone else's situation thus deciding to help Silver, this basically proves that Amy isn't as stupid as the fandom makes her out to be, she's very aware of how dangerous Eggman or the big threat is, she just has a different view of the situations around her or her attraction to Sonic showcases a less severe lens in her eyes, not taking away her ability to not understand the danger itself. This is one of the reasons I love Amy as a character.. In fact in Sonic Unleashed she's concerned on asking Sonic out, but then is quick to realize he needs to stop Eggman and save the world so it can happen. Sure this was the second time Amy made the same mistake, but again she's a young immature girl just blindly followed by her perception of affection toward Sonic. Sure being a kid doesn't excuse Amy's immaturity, but being a kid does explain why she is naive and immature.
Yeah that's it for now, if I have more to add I will add it. But yeah you've basically set through a prologue of me defending Amy. This is also slight spoilers as everything said here will be present in my defending of her, so stay tuned for that. I'd love to answer or debate any questions below.

It was. It's one thing if Amy bought onto the mistake, but she didn't. If anything GUN should be noted for that, spending almost the whole game with the mistaken identity. At least Amy bothered to correct her mistake on the spot. lol

Not really underrated since she’s popular too. Just mistreated because not everyone likes an obsessive person following them and wanting to be theirs, even if he/she is young and immature. It’s just Amy can’t take a hint that Sonic needs to be left alone for a while and she should wait for the right time. I know you’re defending Amy. I don’t like Amy but I can see her as a great friend XD

In some areas maybe, but really how often do you see fans ever include her in anything? More often than not she's either pushed aside just so people can praise Shadow endlessly or not treated in the same light as Sonic, Tails and Knuckles. Sonic Team does like marketing her along with Sonic, Tails and Knuckles. And again, I can see why her flaws won't attract everyone. And yeah that's kinda the point.
