Description
I finally got myself to try taking some pictures of snow flakes - and I really found out that it's incredibly hard! My fingers and toes are freezing!I think these snow flakes were quite small for such ones - I had a hard time even capturing them in the first place, and I simply gave up on trying to capture a single flake. I'll try that next time it snows, when the flakes are larger...
I don't think this one turned out quite as good as I hoped it to, but I'm uploading it anyway, to see what people think

wow! Did you use 1:1 macro? So that I know if I should try taking a pic of a snowflake

oh hmm, that's actually a very hard question I have no idea of the numbers when I use my setup of all the extension tubes and the macro lens..
but heck, if I should guess, it's about 3:1 actually
but it's easier when the snow flakes are larger - this one was quite tiny

hah I also have that problem quite often, sometimes it's not so easy to calculate it But yeah, probably 1:1 would not be enough for photographing a snowflake.

well then you would have to have a very high number of megapixels at least, then you could just cut the flake out but it wouldn't be the same

I know I know I've actually taken some huge magnification pics, like this [link] for example, it's more than 20:1. But I imagine it would be quite impossible to setup that out in the snow

Oh that's so cool! I have been trying so hard to get snow flake pictures such as yours but I never get flakes like that where I live.
Fantastic!

My camera and the rest of my equipment is explained on my profile page right below my deviantID as for software, I simply use the RAW converter that followed with my camera

Impressive, i wish I could get so close, but I do not have any lenses to accomodate such ventures. I love the detail in the flakes, the shapes and the variations of colour. Very pretty, I envy you

hahaa, just last night i was attempting the same thing..
you are so right, snowflakes are so difficult to capture! getting one perfect flake isolated is near impossible!
i was frozen by the end too, with only a few half decent shots to show for it
