Description Full-view for details.

Created from sketch to finish in Photoshop7

Ive been dying to do a sci-fi monster piece for a long time now and this one has elements that ive been trying to incorporate into a composition for a long time.

I glanced at a few photos of various abandoned factories, camcorders and CDC biohazard suits for accuracy's sake, in addition to several close-up stills of a couple 80's horror movies used to get the expression I wanted for the foreground victim.

Thank you in advance for coming by my gallery - comments are always welcome.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I did drawing it.

Your only 14 Dylan and already show strong comprehension of anatomy.

Give yourself some time - you need to practice as much as you possibly can, especially now since you dont have bad habits rooted in deep yet.

What helped me color was never working on a white background - I always lay down a base color, then use a dark foundation for my figures so I can fill in both color and value at the same time.
Dont worry about color so much right now - concentrate on anatomy and drawing from life - like landscapes, still lives.
Look I know its not monsters and girls and sounds boring as hell - but you have to realize that your not going to be effective unless you pull from reality itself so all your compositions, color, value and anatomy are on.

I loved moonknight too by the way - I won a competition hosted by marvel comics when I was 12 and submitted moonknight, hehe!

Tenebrous-Sapphire In reply to ??? [2008-08-12 21:10:21 +0000 UTC]

Holy hell. This is a delightfully freaky image, and how fortunate that something composed by Jesper Kyd happened to be playing in the background (just switched over to Harry Gregson-Williams, but the moment was there ). In general, every aspect of that monstrous creature is incredibly daunting; the sheer scope of the musculature sincerely promises that death is a matter of only one enraged strike, to say nothing about the visual impact of those massive, bizarre hands. By contrast to this brute strength, however, it was a perceptive choice of yours to create certain details of decay, torment, and unnatural structure (i.e. the various protruding sores, exposed veins, the hole-ridden facial construction, and particularly the smattering of almost human-like hair that suggests none-too comfortably about the possible nature of this experiment-gone-awry . . . ).

The quite obviously powerless humans look appropriately . . . startled (), and the camera image cast totally in green (and more importantly portraying none of the depth of lighting, instead producing a more cold, less dramatic but no less horrifying perspective of the scene). The second, slumbering creature seen in the tank on the far-right adds a surprisingly effective additional layer to the otherwordly terror of the scene, and helps quite significantly to contrast the "experiment as it was intended" (the docile, immobile creature in containment) and the "creature unleashed". One really does receive an image of the creature, having broken from containment, lurching down an adjoining corridor amidst the ominous red lights and a blaring alarm, its rage, agitation and overall anxiety mounting just as it breaks through the shrouding mists and beholds his captors. Good night, scientists . . .

A rare bit of adrenal hysteria you have crafted here. Most impressive.

Ok.
Im honestly blown away by this.

Blown away not because you approved ( thats big enough for me honestly) but becasue you gave me your time.

Thats a big deal for me.

I get a massive thrill from hearing what people like about a work; I love to hear the story they write and the things they observe.

Once in a while ill get a comment that is moving.
This is one of those comments.
I'll rarely tell the story I have written for a piece, simply becasue I want the viewer writing thier own and I want to be pulled into thier world and experience the story through thier eyes; through thier imagination.

You have literally told the story I wrote for this one.
Every nook, cranny and shadow you have exposed and overturned - its very, very thrilling.

Is it an original story or particularily deep one?
Not really.

Thats not really the point though - its the invisible language that takes place between artists and viewer that I find so entralling.

I love to cheat the system and be both the viewer and artist at the same time and you really made it happen

Im thrilled you liked this work, thank you so much for your time, it was just so cool to read this.

(Cryptcrawler): "Ok.
Im honestly blown away by this. Blown away not because you approved ( thats big enough for me honestly) but becasue you gave me your time."

Well . . . not MUCH of it (evidence enough found by looking back at the paragraph structure and noting that one of the sentences abruptly cut off before actually saying what was intended -_-). Still, if you consider it of value, you are welcome.

(Cryptcrawler): "Thats a big deal for me."

Evidently.

(Cryptcrawler): "I get a massive thrill from hearing what people like about a work; I love to hear the story they write and the things they observe."

Interesting. Being a largely reference-sketch artist myself, I do not have the benefit of envisioning an original "story", as you put it, to accompany a particular piece. Oh, originality comes into play eventually, to be sure, but it is more in the subtleties, expressing a particular quirk or enhancing a particular emotion that is portrayed in the original, and creating a slightly different ambience for the sketch. As for my "story" associated with YOUR piece, it was nothing more or less than a collection of my own IMPRESSIONS of the art more than actually attempting to string EVENTS together -- MOOD more than moment, if you will.

(Cryptcrawler): "Once in a while ill get a comment that is moving.
This is one of those comments."

You find "adrenal hysteria" MOVING? I think I am beginning to like you . . .

(Cryptcrawler): "You have literally told the story I wrote for this one.
Every nook, cranny and shadow you have exposed and overturned - its very, very thrilling."

So you have LITERALLY written a story to accompany the art, or are we speaking figuratively?

(Cryptcrawler): "Is it an original story or particularily deep one?
Not really."

Hey, if I had known you had wanted a proper STORY, more effort would have been invested. I AM rather deep into my own novel at the moment, though, so a comment of the approximate length I left will need to suffice.

(Cryptcrawler): "Thats not really the point though - its the invisible language that takes place between artists and viewer that I find so entralling."

Intriguing way of putting it. Are you at all familiar with the concepts presented in Nietzsche's "The Birth of Tragedy"? A few of his thoughts regarding the essence of the Greek spectator and his fusion with the tragic chorus sound somewhat similar to your comments . . .

(Cryptcrawler): "Im thrilled you liked this work, thank you so much for your time, it was just so cool to read this."

Not a problem. Interesting, though, that the guy who received the bloody Daily Deviation is himself issuing compliments on the matter so liberally.

A tad confused by the last bit there but I appreciate you taking time again to reply.

All I meant by "story" is the kind of the running thought that takes place when one views a piece of art for the first time, and the questions or impressions that may or may not follow.

I havent personally written a story for this other than a sort of scene that takes place.

Anyway I really enjoyed reading your impressions of the work, I appreciate it, take care.
