Ive been dying to do a sci-fi monster piece for a long time now and this one has elements that ive been trying to incorporate into a composition for a long time.
I glanced at a few photos of various abandoned factories, camcorders and CDC biohazard suits for accuracy's sake, in addition to several close-up stills of a couple 80's horror movies used to get the expression I wanted for the foreground victim.

Theres a book coming out in july called "Digital Art Masters Vol4" in it I detail the WIP for this very piece.
In a nutshell I start by laying down very primitive figures and background shapes on a color canvas in a dark color, usually with a big brush. After that comes adding in color and then light with the dodge tool. After that I spend most of my time resizing, finalising anatomy and light etc. The sketch takes about 3-4 hours, the tightening up process about 2-3 weeks.

That slight tilt to this really gets the point across that choosing the composition is probably just as important to a piece as the actual subject matter.
I love this painted style, how just a few brushtrokes can come together and create your monster here, or the wrinkles in the hazmat suits.
Congrats on the DD, this is certainly deserving of it.

Composition is really, really important to me. Subject matter I can come up with all day, its calling it all up in engaging ways thats the tricky part!

This is really incredible. I love the lighting and the smooth effect, I cannot even begin to point out what strikes me as most wonderful in this image (the gloves and the screen are two of them)
Also the different shadings for top, middle and bottom - creates a rather traditiona, old-school Sci-Fi effect <3
