Description Full-view for details.

Created from sketch to finish in Photoshop7

Ive been dying to do a sci-fi monster piece for a long time now and this one has elements that ive been trying to incorporate into a composition for a long time.

I glanced at a few photos of various abandoned factories, camcorders and CDC biohazard suits for accuracy's sake, in addition to several close-up stills of a couple 80's horror movies used to get the expression I wanted for the foreground victim.

Thank you in advance for coming by my gallery - comments are always welcome.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I did drawing it.

Since about 6-7 years old.
Ive been a serious, practicing one for about 12 years.

I see. Then you deserve to be good.

Art is expression...is it not? I can express myself in other ways. I'm a gamer you see.

I've had some doctrinal issues with art...like what exactly I was expressing thru it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BradRigney In reply to StreaksPsyche [2008-10-13 14:00:08 +0000 UTC]

Sometimes art can be an expression, sometimes not.

I dont like to get too cerebral with my art; I want it to illustrate very simple and primal emotions, like fear, sexual arousal and fight for life or fight for escape. The farthest out ill get is trying to capture mystery or sense of the unknown.

I actually detest political art or overly message laden work - I think its profoundly trite and pretentious.

I would much rather just draw something that I would want to see and let the viewer make up thier own mind or project thier own feelings onto the work instead of telling them what they are looking at.
Thats a one way conversation and I prefer an exhange.

If your struggling with a narrative try to simplyfy it and make it more open ended, ive found the more you invite the viewer to ask questions the more they linger and introduce you to things you never thought of.

Well then, I can see now why you never had any obstacles of conscience concerning the 12 years of training you've had for your art.

You see, I'm a Christian...a Protestant at that. I've always been very...very cautious about not causing others to sin. Now that I think of it, the sins I commit I've always strived to only involve me and only me as much as possible.

What's that got to do with art? Art is expression at least most of the time. And as such it has always been like a social crutch for me since I'm an introvert by nature. Art has helped me be more sociable in ways that most "normal" sociable people wouldn't even bother with since they are already sociable by default.

If my art causes others to sin, or if my art gets me judged by people, then forget it. That was my attitude towards it for years until finally I gave up around 2 years ago.

Then something happened that concerned my sister, which made me realize that as a Christian, I've had a very legalistic existence. Now I'm back doing my "art" thing again, trying to be a more "gracious" Christian to myself, hopefully to be more gracious towards others soon after.

Most of the artists that I know in my life have your attitude towards art. Sufficient to say that they are not "sexually suppressed" like I suspect myself to be. They aren't sexual maniacs either, to the best of my knowledge that is. Now, after many years, I've seen them grow in skill and mature in their art. A lot of them are professional animators. Their art looks like yours.

I'm almost thirty years old, and I am back where I left my art. I thought that I'd start anew, but I found myself in the cross-roads where I buried my art years back.

You can still be a christian and delve into the many worlds art has to offer, sexual or otherwise.

Im a huge fan of JC and the boys (and girls) and likewise consider myself a follower of christ.

I understand and respect your conflict, more than you may think.
Hopefully what I have to say on the matter wont offend you or your sensibilities.

Thankfully we arent in control of who sins and who doesnt; thats a choice made by the individual.
We *choose* to turn our backs to god, we arent forced to.
I think there is much of the matter of spirit when it comes to art and I sincerely believe our talent to render art is given to us by god, we dont just give it to ourselves.

You may be heaping far too much responsibility on yourself in reguard to this. Im pretty sure you were graced with talent so you could use it for the pleasure of others and in turn to please god.

Im not conflicted with the subject matter of my art because I hold it in what I think is a practical perspective; it's there to entertain and excite the imagination, which I think is yet another gift given to us to enjoy and share, not something to beat ourselves silly over with guilt.

How about you just create your hearts desire with the gift you have been given and let god handle the heavy lifting? Thats what I do.

It sounds as if the hang-up in relation to the art might be sex-related?
Sex in art is inevitable.
There is power and profound beauty in the human body that imho is also god-given. Were hard-coded to seek eachother out and reproduce; its in the very fabric of our souls.
Naturally your going to want to express that desire and imho there just isnt any shame in that - its what we were built to do and honestly I think its god's will.

I dunno I dont look at this like a typical christian would I suppose, I dont go to church but I have powerful relationship with Jesus Christ and give him credit for all my gifts.
Draw what you want to see; let others enjoy it and let yourself enjoy the gifts you were given and cast off the cage you've built around yourself, im fairly certain god doesnt want you to be miserable.
Let him handle the part about souls being corrupted through imagery, because its not up to you whether that happens or not.

I hope what I said finds you in the best possible way.

StreaksPsyche In reply to BradRigney [2008-10-14 12:30:27 +0000 UTC]

I do find your reply in the best possible way.

I've had the privilege of discussing many things with a pastor who is art-sensitive. He did help me put a proper perspective on my responsibility as a Christian artist to my audience.

However, the difficulty lies when the sexual thing I want to express is sexually immoral (sex outside of marriage). Even if I draw sex in the context of marriage, sex has this issue about privacy, like it should only be kept between the husband and wife. I'm talking about graphic things concerning sex of course.

I do realize that I am a guy; Christian or not, I am still a guy. And I do realize that as a guy, I will, and always has been by God's divine design, to be drawn to the beauty of the female of our species. Translate that into my art, which is anthropomorphic in nature, and you get a good idea what I'd draw. I do have my own anthropomorphic character with which I am connected to in very profound and personal ways. And I have used him in the past as my vehicle of expression.

I have realized that my responsibility as an artist, and a Christian at that, can only go so far as humanly possible. But old habits die hard. I still am overly-cautious, putting the DA "Mature" tag on my art that I find has the "potential" to make others sin. Talk about idiotic, but better safe than sorry.

However, that has a flip side: What if I put a "Mature" tag on a piece of art that is actually pretty benign? And because I placed a "mature" tag on it, I cause people to find something malicious about it when in reality, it has nothing malicious about it after all?

Its quite a pickle.

I will soon rub off the "rust" that has accumulated on my art skills as I continue to use it, and soon I will be putting up finished artwork again in my DA account. Let's see then what happens.

BradRigney In reply to StreaksPsyche [2008-10-14 14:02:56 +0000 UTC]

Glad to hear it!

But dont sweat the official genre of your work, just do it; use that gift and entertain others with it - thats really your only responsibility as an artist.

Let the viewer decide if its mature or not.
If you think it is then list it as so, the mature rating is really there to protect underage viewers who dont have DA accounts from viewing the matierial - it comes up as a grey "censor" type symbol if they havent registered.

Dont think yourself into a box where you do nothing - just enjoy it and let others decide how it effects them.

I have a great book mark I have lying around that has a fantastic quote on it:
"Hi, this is God.
Ill be handling all your problems today and won't be needing your help.
Have a nice day."

All the best

even more interesting u were able to capture the typical game atmosphere

well, though i have to say, that on second guess, i find the wall behind the specimen kinda undetailed. there are things to discover in the fore- and middleground, like the look on the face and the screen and the tubes, but the walls are kinda empty.
i believe that a fantasy piece, needs this discovery thing, to pull the viewer more into its world.

hehe i hope that doesnt go to far into theory or whatever.
just felt like expressing my point of view
