Here's another piece Ive had the pleasure of working on for Bungie.I figure its pretty safe to post this low res version since its been on the internet for months.
The one was for an EDGE magazine cover and interior double-page spread, it was an enormous piece to work on clocking in at about 5700 pixels wide.
Some of the background was intentionally left amorphous and loose to accomodate letterhead, I also had to use a cut and paste paint overs on the guns and helicopter due to time contraints (4 days to finish the approved sketch) but the rest was exhaustedly hand-drawn.
Having to do paintovers is something I really hate doing but when it comes to commercial work all bets are off; its not about your unique voice and vision anymore its about delivering what a client expects and has contracted you to do.

When you refer to "paintovers" do you mean layers in Photoshop? Or...
BTW I'm still trying to wrap my head around the fact that this is hand painted and not 3D ...

Paintover meaning a photographic or 3 element thats pasted onto the art and painted on.
For commercial work thats due in a matter of days and massive in scale you really dont have a choice, especially with iconic IP's like Halo.
Luckily for me I only do it for guns if im in a time crunch, they are very intricate, nuts and bolts objects to draw, anything even slightly out of place and the illusion is gone. If you have a "Painterly" style you can get away with being messy, but for someone like me who is trying to make the 2d hand-drawn result look 3d you cant be loose.
Everything you see in this work is hand-drawn except the 2 rifles and that helicopter and even then I had to completely re-light and color those elements as well.

@Cryptcrawler: does that mean you had 3d models of these characters, posed in a similar way to make a composition for this scene then you painted over them? or did you paint most of it from scratch but you used an actual in-game image of some items like probably the gun, the helicopter and stuff like that, then you painted over them?

4 days after the approved sketch, so a lot of elements were in plae they just needed to be cleaned up and detailed.
I really had no choice with the guns and helicopter; the rest is all hand drawn. Really nuts and bolts stuff like guns and vehicles are really tough in those time crunches.

Your characters and render of the characters, brilliant mate! It is like you have 3D rendered it! The detail and feel of the armour is really nice. Your colours and atmosphere as always very strong indeed. Love the knife
