Detailed rear view of the banner accessory for [Borg Bunny]
I created this for an unsigned recording artist in the UK called Long John Sliver
The rope work was hand-modelled (including the twists) so it doesn't rely on bump-mapping to get the twisted strand effect.
Why twist the rope manually? Because I'm CRAZY MAN CRAZY! Yeah!

1+ week of work

Tools used: Wings 3D (modelling), Vue d'Esprit 4 (rendering), Photoshop 7 (textures)

That's really very sweet of you to say.
here, let me dance 'wit choo' too
Actually, I was too embarassed to admit that it took more like a week and a half. I consider myself to be quite slow, as I tend to push myself to experiment along the way and get hung up on detail....

but all the detours pay off, in a sense, right?
in your case, it paid off rather well. and your stuff looks great.

well, I guess the detours pay off... experimentation is all part of the learning experience. One never stops learning if one's inquisitive and adventurous.
mind you, having said that... I have no idea why I bother doing all this crap!!!
thanks for the glompy hug ....I think I needed it....

sometimes we just can't help but drift away from the normal process. *lol* i do that a lot too. prolly why it takes me forever to finish anything.

... and hey, i'm all about glompin.

Looks great, but I'd agree with the 'crazy' part.. god, hand-modelled rope? O.o

yeah... There are no tools in Wings3D for using paths to model with either, so it was a case of extruding the rope on section at a time and then manually rotating the orientation of the direction you want the rope to go ready for the next extrusion section so that you end up with a tube that wound it's way around the bamboo poles. And that was just for the general rope form without the twists that the 'strands' follow......After that it was a case of introducing some strand detail and manually twisting the geometry section by section around the approximated axis of the rope's alignment at that particular section.
It worked in some instances - the rope right in the center didn't quite come out as good. Wings 3D lacks some of the more exotic tools that would have allowed me to extrude and twist along a path (for the sake of performing what I did manually on a segment by segment basis). Mapping an image (and bump map) to a winding tube using UV texturing would seem the most likely option if one wanted to go into great detail. Wings3D has basic UV definition tools, but nothing sophisticated enough to have made it reasonably doable in this case. I'd like to look into a few of the more dedicated low cost UV tools sometime in the future....

Took the good part of a day to do the rope...
