Description Full View PLEASE

Part 1 in a series of 3:

Isle of Egg 1: [Storm approaches Isle of Egg]
Isle of Egg 2: [After the storm]
Isle of Egg 3: [Exit]

[added Note: I've just been informed that in a particular Zelda game there is an island, with a mountain, with an egg on top of it. Well... Any hope of originality in this piece has just flown out the window ]

I feel crap today, cos I'd like to get off of this planet and go somewhere that isn't one big spheroid full of deceived sheeple. Unable to hitch a ride off-planet from any passing ET, I figured that I'd give it a rest and get to know Vue d'Esprit 4 a little better. I've been using it as a renderer but not as a scene creator. I thought perhaps I could create something that looked like somewhere I'm not....
I'll probably move this into my scraps, but I'm putting this out for comments. If turns out to be 'eye candy', I might keep it in the gallery. But who reallycares, anyhow?
I'm not very experienced at landscape compositions, but it's easy to do something that looks nice - so I'm starting small.
I like eggs
Go buy yourself a copy of 'Rule By Secrecy' by Jim Marrs, read it, then go burn your TV.

effort: about 4 hours

Tools: Vue d'Esprit 4, Photoshop 7 (Texture & Post production), Amorphium (for the egg form)

I think the shadowing on the far side of the island is a little too sharp but the render is pretty decent and I like the way you framed the piece. The little gulls around the mountain top are a nice touch as well.

I agree with you. It would have given the piece a more realistic depth if it were soft. Thanks for comment

Vue d'Esprit 4 rendering and landscaping, Photoshop 7 (Texture & Post production), Amorphium 1.0 (for the egg form geometry)

I thought it looked like a shreded wheat gone mouldy.

(I'm reposting this response 'cos I don't think I posted it as a reply to your comment, so it probably fell of deaf ears)

it sue has a cozy look to it: the percet place to be alone for a while and relax, no place to land a boat, no place a plane or helicopter could land... nice! it looks a bit too much like from a computer game, but maybe that's the look you went for personally i like photorealistic landscape more, especially if they have unreal elements like your egg in it. if you want to, you could possibly achieve that by changing the green texture... if you want to, of yourse

BrainCode In reply to LiquidStranger [2004-06-11 20:40:07 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the feedback. I totally understand your preference for realism. I actually purposefully enhanced the green (and the blue in the water) primarily because 'colorplay' is a focus of mine. I do like to capture an element of realism, while extending it towards my 'typical' style for vibrant color (without the childish primary look). In this case it results in a look that falls somewhere between reality and a toy. I did come into the graphics field from the (8 & 16 bit) games and early VR industry in the late 80's to mid 90's, and this has played a good part of what has influenced my look. In my own little way, I try to push in a direction that I feel is less travelled, or explored.

I probably come across like some kind of egomaniacal 'elitist designer' trying to foot an excuse for shoddy work - at least it sounds like that to me.

Ultimately, Im just trying to be 'cool' by pretending to be different.

Thanks for your honesty, I completely understand where you're coming from and your advice is absolutely right about the green texture moving it towards a realistic slant.

Thank you.
And thanks for your concern.
Nah I'm really ok. I'm not down on this at all. I'm not that emotionally attached to this as it took about 4 hours. Stuf like the Borg Bunny took an eternity. The final impact of the respective can be the same though. But that's the way the cookie crumbles with this stuff.

Ok I lied... I am starting to get emotionally attached to this piece -because of all the wonderful comments everybody's been posting.... How could that not affect me

everybody's been so kind!

.....ooooh ... oh no...here it comes.......

How the hell did u make the water like that man :/ im gonna go and check out this "Vue d'Esprit 4" program now... but i really love this image.. who cares if someone sais it is in Zelda.. this was your own idea that you thought of yourself. I hate peope who say you have "riped" an image from something else when you tuely didnt.
Y you feelin soo shit man? if i was as good at 3d as you man....
Anywho.. cheer up, this is awsome, i love the colors, texturing, and modelling. Totally awsome work man

very kind of you sir!
nah! I'm not deeply upset about losing some creativity out the window. Hah! that happens a lot. You should see the graphical 'experiments' I discard!

I recommend Vue d'Esprit 4 (I use the standard version), it's easy to get something that looks good with it. What it produces is much more complex than the effort put in. At least in theory. I always end up tweaking and tweaking and tweaking until I get close to what I'm looking for.

Another thing to consider with 'illustrative' (non-animation) renders is that you still have the option to postprocess in something like photoshop. This can sometimes help bring out the best in your creation or even completely alter it or add effects. There's nothing to stop you using whatever there is in your arsenal of tools. Tweaking an image is the graphical equivalent of mastering an audio track. It maximizes the contents of the mix. everything's an art. There's an art to tweaking too.

I can't comment on postprocessing of animations cos I don't have the tools. So I'll stop while I'm ahead.....phew!

Well....
yes/no

I got over the TV quickly, but that was because I replaced one addiction with another.. kind of like going form smoking pot to shooting heroin... I dont miss the Pot, but if that's because I'm 'clean' or if I'm just so messed up I don't see if.
I mean.. I'm on a T-1 line even as I type...

Yo.. are a nice bright shiny chanel full of *OOOhhhs* and *Aaaaahhhs* Think watching fireworks... for *me* it's over in a couple of minutes (or hours) but for you.. it takes a hella amount of work to put it together to be able to present the final 'explosion'...

coffeeperson [2004-06-11 01:58:55 +0000 UTC]

I like it, though it does look like something from a Zelda game like *3Ace said. There was some GameBoy Zelda game that was set on an island with a mountain on it.. and atop the mountain was an egg.
There's nothing I can criticize about it, mostly because I've never worked with a landscape creating program before. It looks quite nice.

BrainCode In reply to coffeeperson [2004-06-11 02:13:07 +0000 UTC]

oooOooops!
Never played Zelda. But I've heard of it....
Geeez now I look like some kinda copycat
Personally it reminded me of the island in Myst. -but without all the interesting features on it.
