Combination of 3D models made in SketchUp with photos of Earth from orbit. The cloud is an inverted image of a hurricane and a hole cut out of the center.

Scene from the novel I'm working on, Imperfect. Takes place on a world called Atanoah, where the entire planet is covered with a black cloud, almost like thick fallout. Only specific areas, where those fires (that you see in the picture) burn can people live, because the fires burn away sections of the cloud so that sunlight can come in.

A orbital highway system was built to enable travel between the "light regions." The suspended space station you see in the image is a node in that highway system. You can just barely see a train pulling in on the side of it.
