Drawing of a major city from my Lower Knight novels.

My goal in this was to make something that would look vintage (I used an old map of Chicago from Wikipedia's archives as a reference to get the effect).

This started as a pencil drawing on 11x14 paper, then I traced over it in Google SketchUp (because it has better guides and such for doing things to precise scale, and it's the only drafting program I have).

Then, I painstakingly traced a screenshot of the SketchUp model in Illustrator. Once the streets were done, I started adding details such as road names and such.

For the canyon, I actually built a three dimensional canyon on to the SketchUp model, then took a screenshot, then redrew it four or five times in different ways before I came up with a look I felt comfortable settling on (I finally ended up making a custom brush in Photoshop that scattered dots to imitate the appearance of pointillism art).

In other words, this took FOREVER! But it looks cool, so I'm happy.
