I don't think I know enough about the subject currently to be of any help. xD; Plus I try to do new things almost every time I color, so my style is pretty inconsistent.
But I could point you in the direction of some tutorials/ videos that did help me, if you're interested.

Well, I mostly learn by example or by looking at other people's work and trying to dissect the techniques they used. Drawing from real life helps too, but there are a lot of nice tutorials here on DA.
These tutorials by *kalamu were a huge influence on my coloring style:

Here's another video by ~SailorClef . I really admire their "painterly" coloring style which might prove useful when dealing with lighting and subtle color variations: [link]
