Description
.This is the last of these. I had been standing there watching this guy for ages, and he did this. I can't quite square it with the conditions under which pelicans are supposed to do this, but anyway here is the bird with the biggest bill/pouch in the world telling you all about it.

I actually got a bit of a surprise when I saw it at full size

Yes that happens sometimes when you take a shot of something. I find full length photos are harder to capture

The gular pouch under the lower bill is rich in blood vessels. The pelican is cooling himself down by exposing it to the air.
Same principal as when a dog pants with his tongue out.

Thanks. It was my first day with a new lens, and didn't really have it sorted. Still don't. I think I may need to adjust micro focus, though oddly it doesn't seem to be either front or rear focusing

I thought of that. It does seem a likely culprit, but I'd thought of this in advance and had the shutter speed up to 1/1250, plus the camera has in-camera stabilisation. And a lot of the shots that day (though admittedly not with this one) were made with the lens resting on a flat surface.

Haha, I never knew pelicans did that! Quite interesting!
