Whosoever hold this hammer, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor.--
Earlier this year, I travelled to Sweden to visit my dad and his parents. One night, we watched Marvel's 'Thor'. Farfar (my grandfather) became very excited. He recalled his school days, where he'd learned about the Norse gods - the mythology behind them and their history in Sweden.
He was full of energy as we watched, and let out murmurs of "oh" and "ah" as the plot developed. He said to keep an eye out for a character called 'Loke' (the Swedish name for Loki) because he is the most interesting. "He is a Gollum character," said Farfar.
Some of the action and dialogue went by too quickly for him, so we took intervals to elaborate on the plot. He smiled, saying "Fantastiskt!" and shaking his head incredulously, "Utmรคrkt!"
He laughed when citizens of New Mexico attempted to lift Thor's hammer, and made mention of a similar crater he'd visited years ago. Every time the Hammer appeared from that point, he would turn to me and say "I want to see him lift it." I saw him jigging from side to side in his chair when the Hammer finally landed in Thor's grasp.
It was late when we finally finished the film.
We all got up, and began readying for bed. During Swedish summer, the sunlight remains a soft glow even when nearing 12 am, and it was in this gloom that Farfar snuck out into the backyard, muttering something like "Wait here, I will get it."
I watched his silhouette tramp over to the shed and disappear inside. Amused but sleepy, I meandered into the kitchen, thinking back on the day.
When I returned, he was standing in the back doorway, holding what must have been the largest hammer in his possession. His grin was mischievous as he proudly held up his weapon. He walked toward me, putting a finger to his lips and saying "It is me. I am the one. Shh shh, you mustn't tell." He playfully bonked me with the hammer, and I couldn't help but smile and laugh. "I won't tell," I said. He hopped off to the shed, chuckling.

Farfar, this is just one of the mirthful memories I have of you. The others are filled with adventure, and fun, and happy faces. You always wanted to play and enjoy yourself. Perhaps there was a bit of 'Loke' mischief in you, along with the might of Thor. Thank you so much for being a part of that holiday, and all the other holidays. I hope you enjoy your next one.
I hear Asgard is nice this time of year.

This will probably be one of my most favorite posts on deviantart, ever. Not only do I love the art, but the story behind it also makes it so... so much more than just art, if that makes sense. Thank you so much for sharing this story.. Very special to read and be able to be a part of your life.
