I dont know how its named in english, but this is in german a "schwacher Qualitäts-Quantitäts-Kontrast". It works, because the colour-contrast dominates. Is the the grey to light, the Qualitäts-Quantitäts-Kontrast gets heavier and at the same time the colours losing the Qualitäts-Kontrast to the non-colours. Thats the theory, but in real life ...
