MARCIA TALLINGTON eyed her ice cream cone, not sure if it was a genuine pleasantry or some sort of joke.
Strawberry, really?
She looked at her towering friend, the superheroine known as the Crimson Valkyrie. To the public that was, to her she was just "Tiff". The statuesque redhead had a mysterious smile on her face. Maybe she was indeed pranking her ... or maybe she was just enjoying her own ice cream. She loved that stuff, after all. Crimson noticed she wasn't eating and turned to her.
"Not your flavor? You should have said something!"
"No, no! It's just ...!", Marcia defended herself.
It indeed wasn't her favorite. She didn't really like strawberry that much, but she only ever had mentioned that she hated chocolate. Marcia immediately regretted suspecting Crimson of a prank. Why on earth did she have to be so paranoid? It was just a friend trying to be friendly. A little post-battle treat.
"I'm sorry, they didn't have any of your favorites", Tiffany continued, "but then again, not every iceman has chili pepper flavor!"
"Giovanni & Pedro's had!", Marcia sighed.
Her favorite ice cream parlor, known around town for their vast range of flavors, even the most bizarre ones imaginable, had recently forcefully been closed. Destroyed, really. Collateral damage of a fierce battle against the mammoth Gigawoman. What was it with those kaiju-type villains always falling onto the most precious of buildings? Marcia took a hesitant lick. At least it was very good strawberry ice cream. Here she noticed all the baffled gazes thrown their way. She snarled.
"No please, everyone, stop what you're doing and stare like perverts!"
At that most people hurried away, minding their business. Crimson just snorted.
"Touchy today, are we?"
Before Marcia could answer, her communicator sounded off. It was Mac! Ever since he had risen up the ranks of A.N.G.E.L.S., he wasn't known for social calls, always busy. So this ment something was wrong and he needed her help. Given that he had an entire agency at his command, that couldn't be good. He only called when faced with a problem out of his league.
"What is it, Mac?", she answered the call.
What her old friend had to say made her stop dead in her tracks, causing Crimson Valkyrie to also stop and turn towards her, looking intrigued.
"What was that? I giant monster in Boston?! Are you f**kin' serious?!"
She listened some more.
"I am aware of that! But where did that monster come from?!"
"Portal!", Crimson piped up.
Marcia shot her a look.
"How did you know?"
But Crimson was looking up, pointing at something above them in the sky.
"No, I mean a portal just opened! Look!"
As Marcia's gaze followed where her friend pointed, she beheld a huge, sparkling portal in the sky. Before she could fully comprehent what she was seeing, a swarm of shadowy beings emerged from it. From this far away, she couldn't make out what exactly they were. However, the things wasted no time to make one thing crystal clear: They were hostile! As soon as the explosions started, the screams followed.
"Mac ...", Marcia spoke into her communicator, "I'm afraid I can't help you, something just came up! ... But I'll let the others know! Over!"
Marcia and Crimson exchanged a glance and nodded. As one, they took one last lick of their ice cream cones and then threw them away. Once again it was superhero time!
