COMMANDER TARRETT, Mac had barely time to get used to the sound of that when his mere thought was drowned out by a blaring alarm the moment he entered the building.
"Man, I can't have shit in this house!"
Cussing to himself he started to run. Soon a security officer caught up to him.
"Commander, you are needed in Lab A!", he yelled.
Not Lab A! Of all the things that was the last thing he had wanted to hear on his first day back. That was were "Aura", the reformed ... well, reprogrammed was more like it ... villain formerly known as "Nejil" was being worked with and on. The technology in her cybernetic body was still lightyears beyond their understanding. Therefore every new discovery was like opening Pandora's box.
"On my way!"
Mac increased his running speed, feeling like an out-of-shape slob already. That was not true, he knew, he was in great shape ... just not by field agent standards. He had been pushing pencils for way too damn long. When he finally reached his destination after a little under five minutes, that still felt like an eternity, he was greeted by a bunch of high-paid scientists running around like so many headless chickens. In the middle of the lab stood Aura, her arms stretched out in front of her, towards a gaping ... hole in reality!
"What the hell did you guys do?!", Mac yelled, already out of breath.
"Wasn't us, sir!", the nearest scientist assured.
Aura glanced over her shoulder, a sheepish look on her face. It was still very strange, yet most welcome to see her emote. Even though he had never been her primary target or direct opponent in the first place, Mac still shuddered at the memory of her cold blue eyes and emotionless face, matter-of-factly stating the most malicious of intentions.
"Sorry, boss, I didn't mean to!", she apologized. "Something inside me activated during a routine check-up and this portal opened!"
"Can you close it?", Mac asked.
"Working on that!"
"Does it lead anywhere? Is it a functioning interdimensional bridge?!"
Mac was somewhat familiar with her portal-generating powers. When she was Nejil, she had been using them to follow Vigil through time and space like a bloodhound. Which ment this portal could basically lead anywhere! Anywhere at all! Aura's features hardened and she bit her lip, not answering immediately. Mac turned to one of the scientists.
"What kind of check-up caused this? Has anyone ..."
"Uh-oh!", Aura's voice interrupted him.
His head snapped around so quickly, he would no doubt need to see a massage therapist about it later. Right now though his stomach turned so cold, he had no time to worry about his neck.
"What do you mean by 'uh-oh'?!"
Aura backed off, away from her portal.
"uh ... boss ...?"
A shadow appeared in the portal. It looked ... human.
"That can't be good!", Mac stated.

Yeah, Nejil is back, too! I had several ideas for her future and ultimately decided on the "good ending", making her one of the good guys and giving her back her emotions. Expect her to show up in a minor suporting role in this story from time to time. Can't wait for her to meet her former nemesis!
