The protheans once controlled the entire milky way galaxy in a mighty empire till they were destroyed and captured, mind controlled and put under forced evolution by the reapers into a much more insectoid species who are effectively immortal as far as biology goes no eating sleeping breathing thinking. Least till the reaper war of the current cycle were "the Leviathans" caused them to awaken which caused many of them to die but those who remain are mentally restored but probably enslaved to a new master the Leviathans.
