Notes: During the era of the protheans, Tekol was a wet, tropical world. Covered almost entirely by tropical forests and marshes, populated with voracious frog-like beasts and many other creatures most would refer to as monsters, any race that would evolve here would have to be willing to fight tooth and nail every day of their life in order to gain any kind of foothold. Enter the vandomar. Evolving from small, mammal-like creatures, the vandomar would eventually take on a bipedal, canid-like form. Sapience allowed them to fight back against the other creatures they shared their home with, driving some to extinction through hunting. Being hyper-carnivores, they never developed agriculture, and remained nomadic overall, save for some scattered cities, which mostly served as places of worship to their gods, as well as homes for their priests, who also served as the givers of law within the cities. No matter which tribe you belonged to, you could find safety within the cities; even bringing a weapon into them was a death sentence. The invading enduromi, however, had no such reservations. The invading aliens quickly conquered the comparatively primitive species, mining their planet for resources. The result was a transformation of their once fertile world into a polluted wasteland, with entire forests being torn down and marshes turning black with soot. The only safe areas to live were the various outposts that the enduromi set up for themselves, with force fields that the vandomar couldn’t even hope to break through. Many vandomar died during this time, with those that weren’t captured and put to work by the invaders going into hiding in what little places there were left to hide. Many lost faith in the gods of old, while others prayed incessantly, desperate to be delivered from their alien conquerors. In a sense, their prayers would be answered when another invader from space, the reapers, laid waste to Tekol more than the enduromi could’ve ever hoped to.
Character Notes: Having been born long after the enduromi conquest of Tekol, Itzakulcan knew no life other than servitude. His father had died long before he was born, and he was taken away from his mother when he was old enough. The only glimpse he ever got of a different life were the stories his mother had told him during childhood; stories of a time when the gods made their world and gave them dominion over it. In a time when many had lost faith in the gods, his mother never lost hope, praying every morning and night for deliverance from their oppressors. Even when he had grown up, his mother having long since passed, these stories resonated with Itzakulcan. During all the hard, grueling labor he and his people were subjected to, he held onto hope that the gods had not abandoned them and would one day pass judgement on the invaders. That spark of faith was dimmed after many years but never fully extinguished; wrath against his oppressors kept it burning even in the darkest times. His prayers would one day be answered, but not in the way he would have hoped. The reapers invasion of the Milky Way Galaxy was swift and deadly. The enduromi stood no chance against them. All were wiped out, with many of the vandomar caught in the crossfire. However, in the midst of it all, Itzakulcan couldn’t help but praise the new invaders as they slaughtered the enduromi like animals. It didn’t matter to him that they also attacked his own kind; if his death, and the death of his people, meant the extermination of his enemies, then he would welcome it. Who was he to question the gods who had finally, after many long years, answered his prayers. When the reapers had finally left, Itzakulcan lie heavily wounded, the corpses of the enduromi and vandomar scattered around him. As he took one last look at the desolate world around him, he offered one final prayer of gratitude to the gods and closed his eyes, ready to achieve glory, and freedom, in the next life.
