Description
I've been wanting to draw some art from my fanfiction/spinoff, A Wind in Manhattan to help draw in more readers (pun unintended). In this scene, from chapter 9, Christine meets one of the Nightmares sent to Manhattan. Since Nightmares shape-shift to one's greatest fears, her Nightmare appears to her as the notorious Captain Nathaniel Flint! But to Macbeth, who shows up to the rescue seconds later, the Nightmare appears as Demona, which why I implemented characteristics of each villain to the Nightmare.
The shadow began to turn in her direction, its eyes glowed a sickly yellow. Startled, Christine dropped the flashlight and slowly began to inch back. Not thinking, she kept her eyes on the creature to gage its movements. That was a mistake. Once she had locked eyes with the shadow, it began to transform. Two eyes became six. A body that had no form became that of a tall man, the face was long and reptilian. Long dark hair blew behind it, even though there was no wind. Christine had seen that face before, several times in fact; in her nightmares.
“Christine...” The vision sighed with relief. “I was worried about you.”
“Stay back!” Christine cried, summoning the winds to her hands.
“My dear, I wish you no harm.” The vision smiled a sinister smile nonetheless. “I can take you home...” The vision drew right up next to her in a flash, reaching out to caress her face. She drew back in fear and disgust.
“Home is anywhere you’re not!” She used the winds to push him back into the wall. The vision flew back and hit the wall without a sound, but he let out an ‘oof!’ as if the impact had knocked the wind out of him.
He laughed as he recovered from the blow and separated himself from the wall. “Even though you were gifted with the winds, you have the same fiery spirit as your sister. Now that was a woman! It’s a shame she’s gone, she would have made a fine pirate queen.” Christine’s fear turned into anger. She summoned more winds to blast him, but he moved forwards through them as if they had no effect. He grabbed her by the wrist with a surprising amount of force. “I was merely humoring you, dear, but now the fun is over.”
“No! You’re nothing but a bad dream! You’re dead!” She struggled to leave his grip, but he held tight like a vise.
“Unhand that woman, demon!” A new voice in a refined Scottish accent demanded. A tall man in a dark trench coat stood at the entrance to the alley. A flash of lightning flew from his hand and struck Christine’s nightmare. The vision flickered like a candle going out, but it soon regained its form when the lightning dispersed.
“Foolish mortal!” the vision cursed.
“Leave the lass be, this is between you and me!” The man stepped further into the alley and Christine saw that this man has white hair and a white beard, neatly groomed. He held himself with dignity and pointed his weapon at the enemy.
“Very well,” the nightmare replied. “I can’t take her with you in the way, now can I?”
Just then a blinding light shone into the alley and landed on the nightmare. “Augh!” It roared as it let go of Christine and covered it’s face to block out the light. “This isn’t over! A Nightmare can always return!” It screamed as it slowly dissolved into nothing.
