Description
Emberpaw padded through the thorn tunnel, along with the rest of the hunting patrol, a vole in his jaws. Sunpaw walked over to him. “Hey, how was the patrol?”
Emberpaw shrugged. “Just like any patrol.”
Sunpaw wished he could’ve been there. Swiftstrike approached them and mewed, “Sunpaw?”
Sunpaw looked up. “Yes, Swiftstrike?”
“How would you like to come see the territory?” he asked, flicking his tail toward the camp entrance.
“Oh, yes please!” Sunpaw beamed and got up to his paws.
“Come along then.”
“Bye,” Sunpaw waved with his tail at Emberpaw.
They headed out of the camp and walked along the old Thunderpath. Sunpaw was squirming with excitement, tasting the air to find the scent of prey everywhere he turned to.
They set off upwards from the camp. Sunpaw heard a rustling in a bush as they walked past it and he longed to try and catch prey. “When will I learn to hunt?”
“Soon,” Swiftstrike promised. “I have to show you the borders, and parts of ThunderClan territory first.” They walked a few fox-lengths more and Swiftstrike came to a stop. “Here is the SkyClan border. Make sure you keep that scent memorized.”
Sunpaw sniffed at the air towards the border. “That’s what SkyClan cats smell like?” he scorned, wrinkling his nose at the repulsive scent.
“Yes, but don’t be so quick to judge. We probably smell just as foul to them too.”
“What are SkyClan cats like?”
Swiftstrike looked up at a tree. “Well, SkyClan cats are excellent climbers and can jump great heights and distances which allow them to hunt in the trees.”
They headed down towards the lake. Sunpaw glanced around, hoping to catch a glimpse of the lake.
They passed through some bushes and on a clearing with a large, tall tree in the center. Sunpaw looked up at it, the sun flashing into his eyes and he blinked away. “Now, this is the Ancient Oak. This is where we practice climbing.”
I can’t imagine climbing all the way to the top of the tree, Sunpaw thought.
They walked onward when they reached the lake.
Swiftstrike’s tail gestured toward the vast body of water. “And here’s the lake that all the territories surround.”
“Woah! There’s so much water!”
“You see that island over there?” Sunpaw's gaze followed Swiftstrike’s and he saw a small piece of land near the edge of the water. “That's where Gatherings take place. There’s one coming up soon, you might be able to go.”
Sunpaw looked up at Swiftstrike in delight. “Really?”
“Mm hm! And over there beyond the island is RiverClan territory. RiverClan cats are usually very well fed, since their prey consists mostly of fish, which they can find in a large river in their territory.”
“Woah.”
Swiftstrike looked over to the other side of RiverClan territory. “And over there, on the other side, is ShadowClan territory. Their territory is a bit like ours but instead of undergrowth, they have pine trees.”
Sunpaw listened intently as all the information came pouring into his head.
They headed a little while near the lake and stopped at a stream. “Right here along this stream is the WindClan border.” Sunpaw’s nose filled with another new and repulsive scent. Swiftstrike went on, “WildClan cats live on the moor, where there aren’t many trees. They hunt rabbits so they need to be fast runners.”
Sunpaw looked over at the moor that lay beyond the stream. What type of cat would want to live there?
As they approached the stone hollow, Swiftstrike mewed, “We’ll begin hunting tomorrow, but for now get something to eat and some rest.”
“Alright, thanks for showing me around the territory,” he mewed in gratitude.
Swiftstrike glanced at Sunpaw. “Of course.”
