Description
This picture took so damn long because of me just being a lazy bastard, and I’m not even that pleased with it in the end. Ah well, here’s my tribute to the Ghostbusters. No, not THOSE Ghostbusters, the Filmation Ghostbusters. Jake Kong, Eddie Spencer and Tracey the gorilla, these guys are the sons of the original Ghostbusters (except Tracey, he’s the same ape from before, even if he turned brown somehow) from the 1970’s live action comedy show. The show was a slap stick childrens’ comedy team much like Abbot and Costello where three men (one in a gorilla suit) played professional Ghostbusters who hunted down the ghosts of Dracula, the Wolfman, and other famous frights, all in cheesy comedic greatness. It was a pretty good show for what it was, though it faded into obscurity. In the 80s, however, Filmation’s relationship with old Hollywood was hairy due to the stealing of their name, so they booed their own cartoon sequel series to the 70s comedy show. It was full of all the same poor animation, recycled footage and crappy action Filmation was known for in other cartoons like He-Man, but it was centered more on comedy, and, like all other Filmation 80s toons, I just can’t help but love it for some reason.
I actually never saw this one growing up. I watched the Real Ghostbusters cartoons, based on the films, as a child many times, but IK never knew about these until a few years ago. Honestly, I enjoy this cartoon more than the Real Ghostbusters. Sure, it’s crappy and slow and just about the weirdest bunch of jumbled ideas ever (their phone’s alive, their clock’s alive, their car’s alive and can go into the future…) but within that wacky nonsense lies a simple, care free, and fun experience that has honestly even made me genuinely crack up a couple of times. The Real Ghostbusters, on the other hand, had the awesome movies to live up to, and, while the two films are easily the best things with the title “Ghostbusters” out there, the cartoon just seemed lame in comparison. It was also rather slow-paced and I couldn’t help but think “this isn’t anywhere near as good as the movie” every time I watched it. If you’re expecting some sort of masterpiece from Filmation’s Ghostbusters, you’ll be let down, but if you take it for what it is – a nonsensical and goofy show with some unique and fun villains and mindless plots, you’ll have a blast.
Anyway, let’s do the run-down of all the characters in the picture:
JAKE – The skinny man with the blonde hair in the center, Jake Kong (yeah, the man’s named “Kong” and the gorilla isn’t…) is one of the Ghost Busters. Jake’s your usual goody-two-shoes hero from back then. There’s not a whole lot to say about him. His nose twitches whenever a ghost is around, and he has the ability to call upon… you know what, it’s too much to explain, just watch it and find out. He has a thing for the painfully plain and unnecessary news reporter character, Jessica. Jokes on him, while he’s wasting time trying to land Jessica, Eddie’s probably in the sack with Futura.
EDDIE – The husky man in the aviator cap, Eddie Spencer is the token goofball of the team. You know, I never noticed until drawing this that, not only do they all where cameras, but Jake and Eddie are dressed like fighter pilots for some reason, though, to be fair, Eddie’s hat is just one of the many hats Tracey wore in the 70s show as a throwback. Despite his bumbling and whiney annoying voice, Eddie’s probably my favorite of the team. I always root for the dopey underdogs, they’re always more fun.
TRACEY – Why there’s a gorilla on the team, I don’t know, but thank goodness there is. Tracey is the most usefull of all the Ghostbusters – he’s the strongest by far, he builds all their gadgets, he pulls everything they ever need out of his backpack, and he even drives the damn car. Though Tracey couldn’t speak in the 70s one, he can say things like “uh-oh” and “okey-dokey” in this show.
BELFRY – Belfry’s the cute little bat buddy of the Ghostbusters who looks like Piglet from Pooh got bit by a vampire. He doesn’t serve much of a purpose in most episodes, and for some reason the Ghostbusters decide to never let him come with them like assholes. Understandably, though, it is Belfry’s fault that the main villain escaped his prison.
I was going to draw Futura, their gal pal from the future in here, but I decided it would be too cluttered, and we already have enough pail hotties in here. I originally thought there’d be much more room on the bottom of the picture than there turned out to be, and everything ended up not blending very good with each other. Anyway, gotta love how just because she lives in our future (where everybody’s purple and sexy for some reason) she and everybodt from our future calls their world the future. Her name is just “future”, really. Hell, her nephew even has a band called “Future Rock”. Gotta love that 80s future cheesiness.
And now for my favorite characters, the villains:
PRIME EVIL and BRATARAT – The ultimate villain of the series, Prime Evil, can’t even be harmed by the dematerializer. I honestly don’t get what this guy’s supposed to be. Is he a robot? Is he a ghost? Is he a ghost in a robotic shell? Is he a skeleton? Who cares. He’s Prime Evil. His voice is pretty whiney too, but you just gotta love how over the top evil this guy is. Bratarat is his ugly little buddy who’s a rat, ghost thing with geysers on his back that propel him forward while farting. Yeah, that’s even weirder than Prime Evil, come to think of it. Bratarat’s voice and the way he says things can honestly just make me crack up some times. Even Prime Evil has a few moments that are pretty damn funny (the funniest being when he’s “doing a good dead” for someone). One thing that makes no sense, though – how the hell were Prime Evil and Bratarat stuck in a cave for 100 years behind a door. They both go through walls all the time. Hell, another ghost shortly before they get stuck even says he’s the only ghost who can’t go through walls. So, yeah, Prime Evil and Bratarat must just be dumb as sh*t.
Now, I’ll do the rest of the villains from left to right
SCARED STIFF – He’s a “robot-ghost”, whatever the hell that means. His voice is perfect, as he’s a cowardly wimp of a ghost whose limbs and body parts are always falling apart. He’s pretty damn cool looking, though, a robotic golden skeleton.
FANGSTER – A play on the word “gangster”, Fangster is a “werewolf ghost from the future”. This guy’s wicked badass looking, but his dopey lisp sure makes him less menacing.
MYSTERIA – Mysteria is a magical witch-like ghost who cares more about looking lovely than scaring sometimes. She also has the ability to warp parts of her body into purple mist and float around.
HAUNTER – A play on the word “hunter”, Haunter is honestly a really funny character. Sure, he’s a pretty darn insulting low blow at British people, right down to the bad teeth, but who can deny how funny this guy is. He’s made me crack up multiple times. The creators seemed to like him the most, too, because he appears more than any other lackey of Prime Evil’s.
FIB-FACE – Though he wasn’t introduced in the first episode, Fib-Face, like Air Head the mummy, becomes a standard part of the villainous team. The two faces constantly finish each other’s sentences and bicker amongst one another.
FLOATZART – A joke on “Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart”, Floatzart is a musical genius. He has several deadly instruments which can produce specters.
APPARITIA – She’s a moody and somewhat egotistical ghost with the voice of a steamy, southern aristocrat. Apparitia is famous for transforming into other creepy monsters and, well, apparitions.
SIR TRANCELOT – A joke on “Sir Lancelot”, despite his cool design, this guy, to the best of my knowledge, sadly only appears as a major villain in the intro episodes. He is briefly featured at the beginning of another episode, but very little of this guy is ever seen. He rides a badass looking skeletal horse ghost, too.
I left out Long John Scarechrome (That’s a terrible name, I think Long John Shiver is way better) and Air Head. Nothing personal against these guys, I just didn’t have room for them. LJS also has a rather sloppy and unappealing design in my opinion, and Air Head would be rather boring to draw. I guess the Tooth Scaries are somewhat major too.
So, there’s my WAY TOO LONG description. The picture, while I like the individual characters’ appearances, don’t really mix together as well as I anticipated, and the layout is pretty crammed and sloppy. I was originally going to have Jake and Eddie blasting the two unfeatured villains, but I ultimately felt it was jumbled enough already. Anyway, I was being so lazy with this picture, it sat for months with barely any progress made. Hope you enjoy it, though.

Y'know, looking back at the heroes, I noticed an odd connection...
Jake- Daring blonde leader...
Eddie- Goofy scaredy-cat...
Tracey- Hilarious show-stealing animal mascot...
The Ghostbusters were like Mystery Inc. if you removed Velma and Daphne.

Pretty much. I guess Futura could be Velma and Jessica could be Daphne. Jessica actually kind of looked like Daphne.

She certainly does, dosen't she?
I had initially thought of that, but sadly the two ladies seem to be more recurring characters, than main characters.
