Description His prayer was answered swiftly. For Manwë to whom all birds are dear, and to whom they bring news upon Taniquetil from Middle-earth, had sent forth the race of Eagles, commanding them to dwell in the crags of the North, and to keep watch upon Morgoth; for Manwë still had pity for the exiled Elves. And the Eagles brought news of much that passed in those days to the sad ears of Manwë. Now, even as Fingon bent his bow, there flew down from the high airs Thorondor, King of Eagles, mightiest of all birds that have ever been, whose outstretched wings spanned thirty fathoms; and staying Fingon's hand he took him up, and bore him to the face of the rock where Maedhros hung. But Fingon could not release the hell-wrought bond upon his wrist, nor sever it, nor draw it from the stone. Again therefore in his pain Maedhros begged that he would slay him; but Fingon cut off his hand above the wrist, and Thorondor bore them back to Mithrim.
(J.R.R. Tolkien - The Silmarillion, Ch. 13, "Of the Return of the Noldor")

Fingon & Maedhros - Detail: [link]

I have always imagined that after Fingon cut Maedhros' hand and released him, before Thorondor bore them back to Mithrim, the King of Eagles took them quickly to a safe place, perhaps an eyrie, where Fingon could tend his cousin's hand and wounds, and so prevent Maedhros' death from loss of blood. That's the very moment I have tried to illustrate, Fingon has dressed the stump, used one of his leathers as tourniquet, gave him water to drink, and is wrapping Maedhros up in his woolly mantle in order to keep him warm. (Why does this sound so slashy all of a sudden? )
Meanwhile, Thorondor is keeping watch, and shielding them from the strong winds with one of his great pinions, under which the cousins take shelter

I know Maedhros looks almost dead and covered in grime... but he's spent long years (1498-5 FA) suffering torment, hung from a mountain, no food, no water, no nothing. His beautiful auburn hair is very long and his famished body is covered with wounds - surely he's been attacked again and again those carrion birds from Angband (according to Tolkien). I wanted this scene to be realistic, hence all the grime, the wounds, the blood... hopefully I've managed to do some justice to the book.

Thorondor is a mixture of a Golden Eagle (the species Tolkien used as reference for his painting in The Hobbit) and an Imperial Eagle, an native species of Spain, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful of birds in the world. I thought the colour of the Golden Eagle fitted better the idea of "King of Eagles", while the head of th Imperial Eagle is the most beautiful. Eru knows it has taken me long hours to finish Thorondor, but I'm very proud of the result

Along with previous Tolkien deviations, this is too part of a project I'm involved in.

Note to Tolkien fans out there: please, take your time when commenting on Tolkien "fanart".
Consider - even if it does not fit your mental picture - whether it does or does not justice to the original as the author devised it. Make comments and suggestions as you see fit. Tolkien "illustrators" (so to speak) will surely benefit from this kind of feedback and thank you for it

Wow. This just took my breath away. The King of Eagles is flat out gorgeous. This is a bird that I can believe could carry two full grown elves.

Soething that caught my eye even more than the sparkle of Fingon's scale armor and the soft texture of Thorondor's feathers is the way Maedhros' hair is matted and dreadlocked. it's these details that make your work so good.

I think the only thing I might have done would be to have the marks of tear tracks on Fingon's face, considering that he was on the verge of having to kill someone he loved when Manwë intervened by sending Thorondor, but otherwise this is a very fitting gap-filler pic.

Bravo!

Yes, I've been longing for something like this. And I agree, he would have to dress the wound. You are a very accomplished painter, no doubt. Now, the hammer falling:

No archer would ever let his bow stay strung for a longer period of time. The bow gets bent, lose shooting power and range, and is just so much expensive wood. Both Fingon's and Thorondor's eyes are a bit off-center. I expect Fingon may be gazing at some far off place, but it is more plausible if he looks at the wound. Thorondor's eyes should be piercing, not white spaces. Maedhros' stump seems like it is to long. If you cut it off where his armband is, it would look more believable.

Good points!
BEAUTIFUL scalemail you've given Fingon. Love it to bits.
The idea of mixing birdraces is a good one, and adds a bit of depth to Thorondor, making him unique. Also, his posture and bearing are great, making him look regal and aloft, yet alert and watchful. And I could go on and on and on and on... So I'll just say well done!

First of all, thanks for your comment

Yes, I am aware of that, I am not an expert of archery in real life, but I know my share about weaponry, esp. medieval. I imagine Elves' bows being quite superior to that of the Children of Men, without being "magical" (you know what I mean), and it's based on this reasoning that I painted Fingon's bow the way I did
Fingon is not looking at the woundd, but at his cousin's face. Perhaps it is not that clear given the size of the deviation, the original is gigantic, so I had to reduce it
I wanted Thorondor's eyes to reflect the light, giving them a mirror effect.

Maedhros' stump, in my opinion, is not too long. The "bandage" (the cloth from Fingon's shirt) covers a great area, that's true, but that does not mean the stump is bigger that it should

BIIIIIIIIG bird! Woot! He rocks! Fingon looks glorious as ever and poor Maedhros .... he's perfectly unhappy. My one tiny thought though - he does have very large feet ... dear Maedhros I mean

Breogan In reply to elegaer [2006-10-09 12:42:08 +0000 UTC]

Yes, Maedhros has large feet since he was called "the tall" and I think that a man almost 6'6'' with size-7 feet would look ridiculous - Besides, his feet are in the foreground, that's why the look slightly bigger than they really are

Well my first impression was... dayum that is one big bird and *poof* immediately the song Big Bird of Eddy Floyd ([link] ) popped up. You have to forgive me, but with artwork, first impressions are the purest form of feedback. Later I read your comments and yes, you achieved greatly in portraying the Lord of the Eagles. Even more so, later on when the associative thoughts came, I had to think of the beautiful image by Ted Nasmith where Beren and Luthien are flown into savety. This image of yours is, imho, in the same quality drawn. There is so much to see and marvel about in it that you absolutely did a tremendous job on this one!
